THE DAY WANED. CHARLOTTE and her reporter friend left the ship, and Nashville managed to grab three hours of sleep before his shift. Half-awake, he stared at the charts in front of him and willed the thickness in his head to lift.

Flathead leaned supine in his chair. “That lady reporter was sure something,” he said.

Mashing the heel of his hand to one eye, Nash scrubbed it back and forth.

“Bugs me though ... you know, because of the memo. Makes no sense her coming on board. Plus, from what I saw, the Commander was awfully chummy.”

And missing tonight. Again.

“Heard a rumor,” Flathead continued. He twisted his head this way and that and lowered his voice. “Heard he had a lady on the side.”

Commander Harris cheat on his wife? That seemed unlikely. Then again, what did he know? The Commander’s family lived a good distance out of town, so he probably didn’t go home as often as he should.

“Who told you that?” Nash asked.

“Think of it,” Flathead continued, not answering. “He’s supposed to do how many nights with us each month? But he never does.”

True. He was gone a lot, and Nashville had suspected long ago that was for nefarious reasons. But he’d been thinking more along the line of gambling.

“Now, he brings a lady on the ship?” Flathead continued. “Looks bad to me, like he was staking some claim.”

Nashville made a face. “With the reporter? That’s ridiculous. She seemed nice.”

Flathead straightened. “You’ve got stars in your eyes like the others. From what I’ve heard ... that others saw with their own eyes.” He stressed this point. “Things aren’t right. I’m only saying.”

“Well, cut it out.”

This remark earned Nash a snort, and their conversation died. But the thought planted in his head wouldn’t go away. There was too much to support it, too many odd circumstances.

His suspicions mounted.

Charlotte was unhappy. He’d found her on the wrong side of town alone. Then she’s on the ship as a reporter, only while she was here, she didn’t interview anyone but him. Plus, the memo made no mention of her friend, the male reporter, attending.

Two more nights before he’d see her again. That was too long. Also, her little sister would be there, and the ideas forming in his mind could only be said if they were alone. The best time to catch her would probably be on her lunch hour.

His mind fled back to their first conversation on the street’s edge. She’d had no reason for being there, no reason but one, which he didn’t want to believe.
