“Yes!”

“What did he tell you about us– about me?”

“What are you so anxious about? He said you and he were fellow travelers, mates. He only made contact because he thought he could save poor old Tony.”

“He didn’t say anything about, about Alaska?”

“Not a peep,” she said forcing a grin. “If you’ve got deep, dark secrets, don’t worry, he kept them for you.”

“Were you angry at me for not telling you about Thinker?”

“Angry? No, puzzled perhaps. But then I probably wouldn’t have believed you anyway.”

Noah’s face relaxed and he nearly smiled. She studied him, wondered what shape his private devils took. She didn’t doubt their existence.

“I have heard nothing from Thinker since the eruption.” Noah chewed his lower lip. “He suffered wounds in the fight with the Orcas. I don’t know if he can heal himself or not. I know he can heal me.”

“You’re very worried about him, aren’t you?” she said softly.

“Yes. Yes I am.” His head dropped back into the baidarka, rummaging noises started again.

“Moira.” The craft somewhat muffled Noah’s voice. “Would you come in here and look at this?”

“Sure.” She pulled herself onto the baidarka and eased into the hatch. He lay stretched out on the smooth floorboards.

The fabric of his cotton pants had settled around his legs, clearly showing their form. They were larger, more muscular than she remembered. She crawled down until she lay stretched out beside him. The ship’s side-to-side motion continually rocked them gently together.

“Look at what?” she asked, wondering if he noticed the sudden tightness in her voice.

“This big tube, here.” He put his hand on the aluminum “keel” tube just below the rounded dent that reversed its curve. “Looks like we hit a log or something.”

“We could have hit any bloody thing when that mountain went. Will your boat be okay this way?”

“It seems solid.” He grasped the reverse curve and tried to shake it. “But I was wondering, do you know of any way to fix it?”

He looked over at her and she realized his face no longer looked pinched and skull-like. The warm, dark eyes gave him a peaceful aspect. She felt drawn to him.

“Fix it? No, I wouldn’t have the slightest. Noah, you’re not messing about with my mind are you?”

His eyes grew cold, nostrils flared and recovered, and his mouth flattened into a thin line. “No. I told you I would not do that to you. You are my friend. Why do you wonder such a thing?” The hurt in his voice speared her heart.

“Because,” she raised up on one elbow and put her other hand behind his neck, pulled him toward her, “I wanted to be absolutely sure this was all my idea.” She kissed him softly and completely.

When she pulled away she saw his eyes full of questions. Christ, she thought, I’m full of questions. Did a bit of meat on his bones change how I felt about him?

No, she decided, but it helped. He’d looked such a freak at first. Whatever happened to him during the fight with Jik had changed his body forever.
