One of Wales's most famous sons, Dylan Thomas was born in Swansea in 1914. Thomas's poems and short stories are famed for their verbal imagery and evocation of nature. His most celebrated works are the radio drama Under Milk Wood (later developed as a stage play and film), and the poem 'Do not go gentle into that good night'. American singer Robert Zimmerman admired this Welshman so much he changed his name to match – he became Bob Dylan.
Renowned philosopher, humanitarian and winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature (in 1950), Welshman Bertrand Russell was also widely known for his altercations with the British government – he was imprisoned twice for his anti-war activism.
