Chapter Eight – Nick

I couldn’t turn around in this town without running into Lilly St. John. My attraction to her was becoming somewhat difficult to fight.

“What are you doing here?” she asked.

“I’m on shift shortly. Jane keeps the firehouse in pastries a couple times a week. Today it’s my turn to pick them up.”

“That’s sweet.”

I shrugged. “Benefit of living in a small town. People help each other out.”

“I love this town. I thought that only happened in places like Stars Hallow.”

“Where’s that?” I asked.

“Home of the Gilmore Girls.”

“I missed that one,” I said. I actually had watched the Gilmore Girls, but I hadn’t remembered the name of the town. And didn’t really want to confess that I’d been a fan.

A wail came from the back of the café. “I don’t wanna leave you, Daddy!”

Lilly and I both looked over. Drew Starzmann’s expression looked bleak as I recognized his former sister-in-law step up to his table. I couldn’t help but wince. “I know, sweetie. But I’ll see you again on Saturday. Maybe we’ll go to the Museum Center.”

Margaret Mader aka “Max”, tried to gently pull Drew’s daughter from his arms, but the kid wasn’t having any of it.

“His ex-wife?” Lilly asked.

I shook my head. “No. She’s Drew’s ex-sister-in-law.” I sighed as Max darted a glance my way and then quickly back to the unfolding drama in front of her. “And in the interest of the strictest honesty, my former girlfriend.”

“Oh.”

“Yeah.” Max shot another look my way as if I could be of help to the situation. Hell, no. I wasn’t getting in the middle of that family drama. “And that glare is continuing proof why I don’t date anyone who lives in town.”

“Or it’s proof that you’re a complete pessimist. You expect the women in your life not to work out.

That wasn’t untrue, but I refused to admit it. “Nonsense. You’re only saying that because no one ever has.”

She stood for a long moment just blinking at me. A grin tugged at one corner of her mouth. “Wait, was that a reference to The Princess Bride?”

“Maybe.” Yes.

“That’s my favorite movie of all time! I had actually decided to watch it tonight.”

She’d just sealed the deal as my dream girl. I was starting to rethink my rule, in spite of the oppressive weight of Max’s disapproval from the other side of the room. Lilly St. John really was adorably cute and had an Emma Stone thing working for her that really worked for me.

“Make it Saturday night, and I’ll join you,” I said, in spite of myself. I waited for my brain to take over once more and rescind the offer. My brain stayed surprisingly quiet.

She leaned back against the counter and gave me an assessing look.

“That’s unexpected.”

“For both of us.”

“Want to change your mind?” she asked.

I gave that a good fifteen seconds of careful consideration. “No. I stand by my original offer.”

Drew left just behind Max and his children and Jane gathered their dishes into a bus tub and wiped the table before returning to us.
