CHAPTER 8

Madeline and Geneva stood on Geneva’s back deck overlooking the woods. She really didn’t have a good view of the mountains themselves, but she said that she liked being tucked away under the trees, having shade any time she walked outside.

Her house was smaller than Madeline had imagined. It was more of a cottage in the woods with one bedroom, living room, bathroom and kitchen. She also had an enclosed porch where she kept all of her essential oils, tonics and potions. Geneva’s decorating style could only be described as eclectic, with colorful modern accessories mixed in with very old family heirlooms.

“Do you think Brady will show up?” Madeline asked, craning her head towards the front of the house to see if she could spot his truck.

“Oh, he’ll come. He knows better than to tell me a fib.” Geneva continued staring straight ahead, looking at a pair of crows flying through the forest, chasing each other.

“How long have you known him?”

She smiled.”Since he was a little kid. I was friends with his mother. We went to church together.”

“I think I see his truck.”

The two women walked back through Geneva’s house and met Brady on the front porch. He was carrying what appeared to be a cherry pie. How on earth had he managed to get a cherry pie when his house just burned down?

“Good evening, ladies,” he said, smiling. How was he smiling? Madeline would’ve been curled up in the fetal position under her bed if her house had burned down. Well, probably somebody else’s bed since hers would likely be gone.

“You made a cherry pie? How?” Madeline said instead of saying hello.

He chuckled. “You know they sell these at the grocery store, right?”

“Yes, but I wouldn’t have thought you had time to go to the grocery store. Your house just burned down, Brady.”

“I’m aware. But that’s still no reason to have poor manners when you come to somebody’s house for dinner.” Acting like it was completely normal that he went out and bought a cherry pie while his house was still smoldering, Brady walked past them and into the house. Geneva shrugged her shoulders and followed him into the house.

“Do the firefighters have any idea what caused it?” Geneva asked as she took the pie from Brady’s hand and set it on the counter.

“Not yet. They have to send the investigators. It might be a week or two before we really know. Insurance is already working on it.”

“Where will you stay in the meantime?” Madeline asked.

“I have a barn. I can sleep there.”

“There’s a bed in the barn?”

“Well, no. But I can make it work. What’s that great smell?” It was obvious to Madeline that he didn’t want to discuss the fire anymore, so she decided not to bring it up. They would all act like nothing had happened, apparently.

“I cooked my famous garlic chicken served over creamy noodles.”

Brady grinned and pulled Geneva into a tight hug. “My favorite. I’m so glad you remembered.”

“When Brady was a little boy, he used to love eating this meal.
