The design of the shoulder is remarkable, allowing a baseball pitcher to throw a ball 90 mph or allowing a person to rock a baby to sleep. The shoulder is a ball and socket joint that gets its support from muscles, ligaments and tendons. Some experts believe that when you move your arm, as many as 26 muscles are engaged at some time in the movement. The more active you are, the greater the risk of injuring your shoulder. It is common to see adults over 50 years of age suffer from a shoulder condition as they get older. Shoulder problems can be the result of many things, including bursitis and tendonitis; or they can be idiopathic (i.e., no known cause).

Many times the corrective exercises will be the same regardless of the cause. But it is still wise to have a medical doctor provide you with a proper diagnosis and have a physical therapist give you corrective exercises. Some of the common conditions seen in the older adult population are rotator cuff injury and frozen shoulder. Stretching is very important for people with shoulder problems—I’ve included some in this workout.
