CHAPTER

THIRTEEN

MICHELLE

There’s something decidedly familiar about the PLQ. If Suevans did glamping, it would be this. Smooth walls form the interior, though the whole structure appears vented. It does fit neatly inside the hut, and now, instead of a dirt floor, there’s a clean, non-slick surface and a cot big enough for a Suevan warlord.

The temperature is comfortable, and even though I know there’s a monster out there, likely hunting us… I feel safer in this than I have all day.

“Do you wish to start with food or your bathing?” Alvez asks, closing the strange door behind him.

“Food,” I say instantly. “I might be gross and salt-water-soaked, but I want to eat when I get the chance.” Also, I’m not sure how hands-on he’s hinting at being for this bathing, and I’d rather make any more decisions on a full stomach.

“I will prepare rations for you. I have not cooked for you since your first day here,” he says casually.

“You cooked for me?” I wrinkle my nose, trying to wring my hair out. Ugh. I smell weird. “When? All I remember is getting to Edrobaz and having food delivered.”

He gives me a strange look, clearly as confused as I am. There’s a tiny table and two chairs, lightweight Suevan design. Alvez rummages through one of the crates, pulling out two bright blue packets.

“I hunted for the feast before you arrived, with the other warlords. Then the Rogue and I cooked it. It is traditional for the male to make the female a meal to share. It is a gesture that tells the world I will care for you always, from the start of our union until the end.”

I didn’t know that. I knew something was up at the ceremony, had a bad feeling about the whole thing, but had no choice but to follow Captain Jacks’ and the Federation’s directive. I clear my throat and watch him pour a golden liquid into the ration packets. When he shakes them thoroughly, I squint, confused about what the heck he’s making.

I need to change the subject. I feel bad that I haven’t even done the least amount of cultural research about the Suevans.

I got here, got married… and I’ve been doing the bare minimum to make the best of things.

“The Rogue? Jul’s husband, right?” I finally ask.

He sets the pouch in front of me, and to my surprise, it steams and stands upright. Even more shocking, it smells really, really damn good.

I pick it up, marveling at its heft, my mouth watering at the smell.

As for Alvez, he’s already halfway through, slurping at his with gusto.

“What is it?” I finally ask. It’s not quite bright enough in the PLQ for me to make out what’s floating in the dark interior of the pouch.

“It is noodle soup. Troblek broth, very nutritious.”

“Oh, okay. It smells good.” Smells a hell of a lot better than any Federation rations I’ve ever had. “How does it get hot?”

“Do you not have ready-serve rations on Earth?” He seems genuinely curious.
