Chapter 10
Jason and Vanessa headed back to the precinct just before dinnertime. Vanessa was getting that âIâm feeling weak due to lack of foodâ look, which Jason had learned to recognize a long time ago.
âGet a bite to eat on the way back?â
âGreat idea. Where?â
âWell, weâll be going past Stumââ
Her head bobbed. âExactly what I was thinking!â
Jason smiled. âOkay, then, Stumpyâs it is.â
Twenty minutes later, he parked, and they got in line. Stumpyâs BBQ used to be a secretâfrequented by officers and city workers in the knowâbut those days were long gone. The saucy ribs and onion ring loaves had become part of San Antonioâs fabric, which meant lines. Still, the service was fast and the food worth the wait.
Jason had a half-rack of ribs, Vanessa a pulled pork sandwich, and they shared a loaf of onion rings. The loaves were made by stuffing hand-breaded onions into a fry basket, then dumping them in hot oil before turning them upside down on a plate. About as far from healthy as dancing is from dead, but oh so good.
Jason rarely passed up an opportunity to enjoy them. âThese are amazing.â
âSo youâve mentioned before, while trying to eat my half of the loaf!â
âWhatâs that you say?â
She rolled her eyes. âDonât try your innocent tone on me. Iâm having none of it. In factââshe reached across with a knife and sliced the loaf in halfââthere. You have yours, and I have mine.â
âYour half is larger than mine!â
âOh, quit your whining.â She spun the plate to reverse the halves. âThere! Happy?â
âYes.â
âYou two sound like a married couple!â
Jason and Vanessa looked up. Libby Turner stood next to their table.
âFortunately, thatâs not the case.â Vanessa grimaced. âHi, Libby.â
Jason had his mouth full but raised a hand to say hi.
The city crime reporter from the San Antonio News smiled down at them. âIâd ask to join you, but I was just leaving.â
Vanessa smirked. âIâd ask you to join us, but you were just leaving.â
Libbyâs long red hair was pulled into a ponytail, and her green eyes sparkled. She made an exaggerated pout. âOh, come on, Vanessa. Donât be like that.â
Vanessa, her mouth now full, mumbled something that resembled, âLike what?â
âOkay, Iâll leave you be. I just wondered if you had any comment on the JLM killings.â
Jason swallowed hard. âJLM killings?â
âYeah. Donât you two read the paper?â
âIs that the name youâve chosen this time around?â
Libby grinned. âGotta have a hook.â
âIf you say so. No, we donât have a comment right now.â
âWhy? Not getting anywhere with the investigation?â
Jason refused to take the bait. âItâs not that at all. The fact is, we have a policy.â
âPolicy?â
âYeah.â Jason stared up at her. âWe never comment on cases while eating.â
Libby inclined her head to one side. âThatâs a policy?â
He deadpanned. âIt is now.â
She grunted. âFine. I can tell when Iâm being put off. You two enjoy your meal, and weâll catch up sometime when youâre not eating.â
Jason smiled. âSounds good. Thanks for understanding.â
Her tone turned petulant. âOf course.â
He watched her leave then looked at Vanessa.
