AUGUST

MONDAY, August 1 – Even the greatest weekend of a guy’s life has to come to an end. All too soon in my case. At breakfast I got a call from Charlotte reminding me that my DMV appointment is at 2:15 today. I growled and said I would be there.

We packed our bags, Almy peeled off another Benjamin for the maid, I paid the scary bill, and we hit the road.

On the drive south I laid the L-word on her. She said her feelings about me were “evolving.” She said she was “inching toward feeling” that she could trust me.

“Anything in a positive direction is good news for me,” I said. “I realize I was starting from a low position.”

“The lowest,” she said, smiling. “If I agree to do the sequel series with Teejay, do you want to be in it?”

“You know I do, dear—assuming my part is decent.”

“Spoken like an actor. OK, I’ll see what I can do.”

“Here’s a thought, darling. You could skip returning to New York.”

“What do you mean?”

“Do you really think any director or producer ever will care that you only had three years at Juilliard instead of four?”

“I can’t drop out of college, Nick. My parents would have a fit.”

“OK, live your life for your parents instead of for yourself.”

“I finish the things I start, Nick. I’m going to graduate next year.”

“Or you could graduate from UCLA or USC. They’d love to grab you as a transfer student.”

“Nobody transfers in their last year of college, Nick. It’s just not done.”

“Oh. I never heard that rule.”

I was reminded anew that Almy’s character tends toward cast-iron inflexibility. Generally with My Love, it’s her way or the highway.

“Here’s another thought, dear. You kick out Everest, I pay for moving his lousy, stinking piano, and I’m your roommate for your senior year.”

“And what will you be doing in New York?”

“Looking for stage work, going to museums, getting to know the city—the usual stuff actors do in New York.”

“Didn’t you just buy a house in L.A.?”

“So I’ll sublet it. No big deal.”

“You’re serious?”

“Do I look like I’m joking?”

“I thought you hated bugs and rats.”

“We’ll hire our own private exterminator.”

“I don’t know, Nick. This is moving way too fast for me. I’ll have to think about it.”

“OK, dear, we have plenty of time.”

“And what about your new girlfriend Kinsley, the sexy film student?”

“Say the word, dear, and she’s out of the picture.”

“But in the meantime, you’ll continue sleeping with her?”

“No, darling. That’s finished. Kaput.”

“Should I send Mr. Clancy over to check on you? When’s her next visit scheduled?”

“We usually get together Tuesday nights.”

“That’s tomorrow. So tomorrow are you taking me out to dinner?”

“I am, dear. I’m phoning Kinsley today and breaking our date.”

“My grandfather is not going to be happy about all this socializing with you.”

“We’ve borne that cross before, Almy. Very few people conduct their lives to please their grandfather. It’s just not done.”

“Very few people have a grandfather like mine.”

Yeah, Trent Preston is super famous, but never won an Oscar.
