AUGUST
MONDAY, August 1 â Even the greatest weekend of a guyâs life has to come to an end. All too soon in my case. At breakfast I got a call from Charlotte reminding me that my DMV appointment is at 2:15 today. I growled and said I would be there.
We packed our bags, Almy peeled off another Benjamin for the maid, I paid the scary bill, and we hit the road.
On the drive south I laid the L-word on her. She said her feelings about me were âevolving.â She said she was âinching toward feelingâ that she could trust me.
âAnything in a positive direction is good news for me,â I said. âI realize I was starting from a low position.â
âThe lowest,â she said, smiling. âIf I agree to do the sequel series with Teejay, do you want to be in it?â
âYou know I do, dearâassuming my part is decent.â
âSpoken like an actor. OK, Iâll see what I can do.â
âHereâs a thought, darling. You could skip returning to New York.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âDo you really think any director or producer ever will care that you only had three years at Juilliard instead of four?â
âI canât drop out of college, Nick. My parents would have a fit.â
âOK, live your life for your parents instead of for yourself.â
âI finish the things I start, Nick. Iâm going to graduate next year.â
âOr you could graduate from UCLA or USC. Theyâd love to grab you as a transfer student.â
âNobody transfers in their last year of college, Nick. Itâs just not done.â
âOh. I never heard that rule.â
I was reminded anew that Almyâs character tends toward cast-iron inflexibility. Generally with My Love, itâs her way or the highway.
âHereâs another thought, dear. You kick out Everest, I pay for moving his lousy, stinking piano, and Iâm your roommate for your senior year.â
âAnd what will you be doing in New York?â
âLooking for stage work, going to museums, getting to know the cityâthe usual stuff actors do in New York.â
âDidnât you just buy a house in L.A.?â
âSo Iâll sublet it. No big deal.â
âYouâre serious?â
âDo I look like Iâm joking?â
âI thought you hated bugs and rats.â
âWeâll hire our own private exterminator.â
âI donât know, Nick. This is moving way too fast for me. Iâll have to think about it.â
âOK, dear, we have plenty of time.â
âAnd what about your new girlfriend Kinsley, the sexy film student?â
âSay the word, dear, and sheâs out of the picture.â
âBut in the meantime, youâll continue sleeping with her?â
âNo, darling. Thatâs finished. Kaput.â
âShould I send Mr. Clancy over to check on you? Whenâs her next visit scheduled?â
âWe usually get together Tuesday nights.â
âThatâs tomorrow. So tomorrow are you taking me out to dinner?â
âI am, dear. Iâm phoning Kinsley today and breaking our date.â
âMy grandfather is not going to be happy about all this socializing with you.â
âWeâve borne that cross before, Almy. Very few people conduct their lives to please their grandfather. Itâs just not done.â
âVery few people have a grandfather like mine.â
Yeah, Trent Preston is super famous, but never won an Oscar.
