CHAPTER SIXTEEN

“Good morning, Mel,” I say, tapping her desk as I stroll past.

“Morning!” she calls. I can hear the pounding of her feet as she follows me into my office.

She plops into the chair opposite my desk. I take my time, putting my purse away in my desk drawer and taking my jacket off. I’m draping it on the back of my chair when she explodes, “Oh my God! Will you please just sit down and tell me what happened this morning? I’ve been waiting on pins and needles for the last hour!”

I sit down and glide my chair toward my desk. “I went to see Cole this morning.”

“Yeah, yeah, I figured out that part when you were late getting here. Tell me what you said and then tell me what he said and then tell me what you said when he said what he said!”

A laugh bubbles out of me. “You are really invested in this, aren’t you?”

“Are you serious right now? You finally have a story to tell and it turns out, you suck at storytelling.”

I shake my head. “Would you relax? Everything went really well this morning. Actually, better than I hoped. Happy?” I raise my eyebrows.

“Marginally,” she says, rolling her eyes. “It’s a start, but I’m gonna need more detail than that.”

I fill her in, starting from the beginning while leaving out the parts about time travel. I’m not sure she’s ready to hear about that. Mostly, I’m not sure I’m ready to say it out loud.

I tell Mel that Cole wants me to come back when he’s closing up today.

“What time is that?”

“Two o’clock.” My eyes flick to the clock on the wall. “Which is less than five hours from now.”

“What’d you tell him? You better have said yes.”

I smile. “I did, though I’m still not sure it was the right decision.”

“Pssh, of course, it is. And it’s perfect because you have that meeting with Allison this morning and then the rest of your day should be smooth sailing. Perfect for bowing out early.”

“Who’s leaving early?” Jackie snivels from the doorway.

“Should’ve closed the door behind me,” Mel mumbles under her breath.

“Good morning, Jackie,” I say in my best business casual voice. “What brings you by?”

“I thought I might sit in on your meeting with Allison this morning. After all, two heads are better than one,” she chirps.

“Hold on, how did you know Sylvie has a meeting?” Mel glares at Jackie.

She just lifts a shoulder. “What can I say? Word around here travels fast. But not half as fast as you, Sylvie. I couldn’t help but overhear—”

“Yes, you could,” Mel quips.

Jackie shoots daggers at her, and then quickly masks her face with a smile. “You’re leaving early, again? Wow. Well, good for you. Don’t want to work yourself to death. I should know, I’m always here. I mean, just the other day, Allison said, ‘Jackie, you are so dependable. You’re always here.’”

“Allison didn’t say that. I call bullshit.” I’ve gotta hand it to Mel; she just says it like it is.
