I Wasnât Going To Give It Up
Justin Fluker
I came to H.C. Wilcox Technical High School when I was thirteen and instantly joined the cross-country team. I was okay at running, and I was the seventh place varsity. My place didnât even count. (only the top five count towards the teams score) I spent that whole year after the season running to get better. I came back my sophomore and junior seasons as the number one runner not only in school but in the city and the conference. When I came into my senior year season about two races into the thirteen race season my knees started to become inflamed and I couldnât run without limping through half a run. My coaches said I couldnât run without seeing a doctor. I went to the doctor and he said I had tendinitis. I missed all but three races in the season, but by the time I came back I was out of shape and had lost my wind. I was finishing close to last place in my races. Then came the last race of my high school career. I took off from the start. I couldnât even feel my knees, just the thought of not finishing on top made me sick because I had worked so hard to get there. I wasnât going to give it up. I didnât see any of my teammates the entire race. When I crossed the finish line I was tenth in the invitational of one hundred people. That is probably the proudest moment in my career so far.
JUSTIN FLUKER. After high school, Justin Fluker went on to Post University where he studied sports management and continued running cross-country. As a freshman athlete, Justin was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Rookie of the Week for being Postâs top finisher (44th out of 113) in the Philadelphia Metropolitan Championships.
