Lenny
âHer temperature is down, and weâll be bringing her out of the coma. All her biometrics are close to normal and she seems to be making a strong recovery. Now, it remains to be seen if the virus has caused any brain trauma.â
Dr. Adam Parker was updating Chuck on Lennyâs condition. The brain damage was a worrying side effect in some of the other patients. In the ward where Lenny lay comatose, Dana was across from her, passed out and heavily medicated. Jaxon had brought her into the Medical Center only a short time ago.
Heâd caught Chuck and Dr. Parker up on what he and Dana discussed in her office and what they needed to do. They had talked for a while, waiting for Lenny to regain consciousness. Chuckâs anxiety was obvious once he learned of the brain injury that could result from the virus. He had looked at the sleeping woman and prayed for her to be all right â for him and their tiny, unborn boy.
The first thing Lenny became aware of was soft, murmuring voices. A light came gradually into focus before she blinked, opening her eyes. It was as if she was a million miles away and everything took on a dreamlike quality. She couldnât remember where she was or how sheâd gotten there. She didnât know what day of the week it was or what time it was. All she knew was her head was pounding from the worst headache she could remember ever having.
Lenny let out a rasping moan at the dryness of her throat. She blinked again and tried unsuccessfully to focus on the two faces either side of where she lay. Her brain searched for names. She tried to speak, but what came out was a dry hiss.
Water. I need some water.
Lenny drifted for a few moments and gradually the drugs to induce the coma wore off. She became more alert and noises which at first were muffled and indistinct, sharpened into sounds that made sense. There were voices and the surrounding bustle of the hospital became louder. Most irritatingly, there was a constant beeping of machines at her bedside. She cleared her throat and tried to sit up.
âHey now. Not so fast, Len.â
It was Chuck.
He put a gentle hand on her shoulder to restrain her and she didnât resist. It was such a comfort to feel his loving touch. She gazed into his smiling face.
Lenny smiled back. She tried again to speak. This time her voice was soft, but audible.
âHi. Whatâs going on?â Lenny asked.
Chuckâs gentle smile split into a beaming grin and he glanced over at Dr. Parker who also seemed cheered by her wakefulness.
âHi darlinâ,â Chuck said, his adoration obvious to her. âItâs good to see you. You had us worried there for a while.â
âHow do you feel, Lenny?â
Dr. Parker was talking now, and she turned sleepily to face him.
The doctor looked tired and worry-worn. He was also pale, with a clammy sheen of fever on his dark-brown skin.
âIâm thirsty, but by the looks of things Dr.
