“In that house, I slept in a kind of closet under the floor. What I mean is, there was a closet in one of the rooms—an ordinary closet with a trapdoor in the bottom. I would go through that and sleep under the floor. They’d close the trapdoor and put pots on top of it, so that way no one could tell there was a person sleeping underneath.

“The raid was truly terrifying; the Krauts came in and demanded the closet be opened. They were barking, ‘What else is in there?’ Of course, I kept quiet, didn’t open my mouth. They didn’t know I was there because you couldn’t tell from the closet, so they had no idea there was a trapdoor with a bed beneath it.
