Chapter 35

What is this? Let me help you, Capitán.” Crab watched as Captain Jack leaned on Patrick for support.

“You are ill. Sί. You are ill.” The ferry skipper escorted them to the front row and helped them get seated.

"Now, I must attend my duties. If you need anything my assistant will be standing by to help you." He ducked inside, climbed up to the pilothouse and manned his station.

Molly joined them in the front row. Papa opted for the wind blowing in his face over smelling the diesel fumes coming from the stern. The water was beginning to whitecap which meant the crossing might be a bit rough.

Molly had considered coming over on the Cobra as that would have been faster. But Patrick was only just learning to navigate the craft and she was afraid that may have been too uncomfortable.

They were about thirty minutes from arrival time when Molly noticed Papa slumping in his seat. She touched his hand and squeezed it gently.

“What? Are we there already?”

“No, Papa. Here, lean on me. It’s not much longer.”

The whistle announced their arrival. Molly aroused Papa and Patrick helped him to his feet. As soon as he had maneuvered the ferry to its mooring, Crab came over to Molly.

“El Capitán does not look so good, Missy Doḱtor. He looks ill to me. But, then, I’m just a ferryman. What do I know about sickness?”

Molly turned to Crab, “He’s not feeling well. He’s going to spend a couple of days in the hospital. Just checking him out. Most likely he’s anemic.”

“It is good you are with him. He speaks of you always.”

They took a cab to Lee Memorial Hospital Emergency Entrance. Molly entered the name Jack McCormick on the registration sheet and handed it to the triage nurse. But she'd not filled in the section that asked for the patient's primary complaint.

“You haven’t completed the form, miss. We need the form to be completely filled out.” The nurse handed the form back to Molly and resumed reading a stack of papers on her desk.

“That’s not necessary, Janie. He’s with me,” called a deep voice behind Molly.

“Yes, Dr. Strickland,” the nurse replied. She’d not question this order. All the nurses knew Dr. Strickland. And some wished they knew him even better.

"I didn't expect an escort but I won't turn it down either." Molly was surprised to see David, but glad also.

"Dr. Strickland, this is Jack McCormick, my grandfather."

Papa reached out his hand and Molly couldn't' miss seeing the tremble as he did so.

"I believe it's Captain McCormick, isn't it, sir?" Dr. Strickland took the Captain's hand and shook it.

"Your name is known around here. I seem to recall we have a cancer ward named in honor of Margaret McCormick. Apparently, she was quite a lady."

"Thank you. She was that and more," replied the Captain.

Jack had followed Margaret's wishes and funded this ward as she had requested. Her trust fund had never been touched, and Margaret thought this was an excellent place to use some of those funds.
