Lin, 2053

Omar came to Barcelona for my fifty-third birthday to celebrate and ended up staying for six months. I had an apartment that overlooked the beach and had no problem with him taking the spare bedroom. So I didn’t think anything of it when I came home and heard the movement of the rocking chair on the porch.

“Omar, I bet you won’t guess who I saw today!” I called out from the kitchen. “Do you remember that guy from Prague who could play the harp while also playing the violin with his toes? He was—”

I screamed.

It wasn’t Omar’s large and muscular form in the chair but a stick-thin man with thinning hair. He stood up and turned around. “Hello, Lin. I apologize for frightening you.”

“Mr. Winters? Why…why are you here?”

“I wish to discuss something with you.”

I had never privately spoken to the man who’d given me so much life and money. I saw him at certain events, of course, but there were always other people around.

“With me? Why?”

“Would you mind if we sat?”

“Um, yes, of course. Please do.” He sat back in the rocking chair and stared out at the evening sky. I walked over and sat next to him. He didn’t immediately speak, and I kept glancing over at him to see what he was doing, but he only rocked gently back and forth. I couldn’t take it anymore.

“What did you want to speak with me about?”

“Your childhood.”

“My childhood?”

“Yes.”

I was starting to calm down and my shock was lessening. “Look, I’m extremely grateful for everything you’ve given me—”

“Ava’s given you,” Warren said.

“That Ava’s given me…but I have to ask, what is going on here? Why the hell do you care about what happened in my childhood?”

“Happening,” he said.

“Excuse me?”

“You said happened. Past tense. I corrected it to the present.”

I laughed, thinking that this was some joke or that Warren had gone senile. “Right… Okay. Warren, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I’m fifty-three years old.”

“And still very much a child.”

“Right,” I said, standing up. “Look, I don’t care that you’re a genius or that you’re the richest man in the world. I want you to—”

“Sit down.”

He spoke in such a way that I suddenly felt scared. I hugged myself and scanned my surroundings. Inside the apartment, a man in a suit stepped out of the shadows. My heart began racing again, but I sat. The sound of the rocking chair, which had always been so relaxing, transformed into something eerie.

“What do you want from me?” I asked.

Warren sighed. “I only want to speak with you. To inform you that you’re wasting your time.”

A spike of anger rose from my chest to my throat, but I shoved it away. I took a breath and said, “And how am I doing that?”

“I’ve watched you these last thirty years. You wander from place to place, without thought, without purpose.”

“You’ve been spying on me?” I asked.

“Of course I have. Do you think I could just give away a pill
