Twenty Two

The prisoner was crouched a step away from the door. He’d just given the signal through the air vent, and was about to start his plan for escaping. The Other was waiting just over the threshold. He could feel it wanting him to leave the room. Calling him to leave the room. To be devoured.

He laughed, a low cackle. He had his own plans, though, and the Other would find him harder prey than expected. They wouldn’t be able to push him around anymore. Not when he was done.

The food tray was sitting in front of him, filled with the watery brown mess that had been pushed through the door ever since he destroyed the tray full of fresh fruits and vegetables. It smelled foul, and tasted worse, but he had eaten all of it until now. The Other was waiting, and he needed to be strong. He needed to be ready.

When the tray slammed against the cell door, the brown substance spread all over the wall. Streaks of it slid to the floor, making the room smell like a backed up sewer. But he didn’t care. He wouldn’t be in it much longer.

He let out a loud scream, pounding on the door. Pounding on the wall. Pounding on the floor. Incoherent screams that ripped this throat raw with the power he put behind them.

“God damn it!” a loud voice called from the other side of the door. Grinning, he heard the sound of the keypad beeping as the Marine entered the security code. Was the Other grinning, too?

As the door slid open, he pulled the long shard of plastic from his bed and held it by his thigh. The Marine took one step into the cell and gagged. “What the hell is wrong with you? You ate this shit for three days, but now you complain?”

The prisoner tried to keep from cackling as he approached the Marine. Her back was to him as she examined the streaked walls and shook her head. “You’re going to clean this up, traitor, or I’ll beat the ever loving shi…”

Her words were cut off by a gargle as he stabbed the long shard into her neck, through the weak spot where her chest armor and helmet met. He’d been around Marine armor for years, and knew every weakness that existed. No one could protect themselves from him.

The Marine started to slump down, but he wrapped his arms around her chest. Holding her tight against him, he pushed forward to the cell door. The Other waited.

“Come on!” he screamed. “Attack me. Now’s your chance. I’m here, ready and waiting.”

When nothing happened, he giggled. Had he scared the Other away with his words? Or did it lurk just on the other side of the door, waiting for him to step forward.

It was a struggle to hold up the weight of the dead Marine and her armor, but he gritted his teeth and stepped forward. Feeling his arms begin to lose their grip, he pushed the body through the doorway.
