At the bottom of the letter Martha had jotted down an address.

Two letters in two months. That was all, and it wasn’t even so much less frequent than usual. But in spite of the brave face she’d tried to show Martha in her letter, Eleanor was worried. She knew Martha well enough to read what her words did not say: both the ironies she intended (Eleanor could just see the flash of wry knowingness in Martha’s eyes when she read “All the women take turns cooking” and “They aim to abolish hierarchies of every kind, to upend the traditional roles of men and women”) and the dissonances and doubts she would not even admit to herself. Eleanor was bothered less by Jack’s stint (stints?) in jail than “He gets angry” and (words to break Eleanor’s heart over and over) “Who but you has ever loved me?”

And “So I write in secret” and “I’ll find a way to get to a post office.” These phrases made Eleanor’s blood run cold. Had her sister been kidnapped? She knew she hadn’t been. Martha had gone willingly. But in dark moments, Eleanor wondered if love itself could be a kind of kidnapping.

“You’re strong and brave and brilliant,” Eleanor whispered to Martha, across the miles and silences. “You’re better than he is, better than anyone. Never forget.”
