Chapter 33

The four-hour trip to Vegas was pretty uneventful, but I guess that’s what I get for sleeping the whole way. My comrades actually didn’t try to wake me up until we hit the Strip. You know, only the best place in Sin City to uh, sin, I guess.

But after my first official glance out of my window, I saw that there wasn’t going to be any sinning going on in what was left of the once great city. I wasn’t surprised by the abandoned cars and buses or the gutted, falling down buildings.

What was surprising was the first sign of life we saw when passing by the Stratosphere, the giant hotel/casino that had one of the tallest towers in the city.

“Does anyone else see the lights on in the tower?” I asked my travel companions, pointing to the mammoth tower and the two lit up rooms on the top floor. The flickering let me know it was probably a fire and not actual electricity. The Stratosphere was a big joint, if you didn’t already know, and it seemed like mother apocalypse hadn’t exacted too much discipline on the place. Most of it looked to be old, of course, but intact or at least not completely collapsed. And the signature super-tall tower was still standing.

And possibly housing feral raiders.

“There’s a building with literally almost twenty-five-hundred rooms next door, and they decide to stay in the Top of the World restaurant,” I said. “How very awkward of them.”

“Raiders, most likely,” Sam said like it wasn’t a big deal. “This place bustles a few months out of the year with raider activity during the summer, so they’re most likely here for the rally.”

“Rally?” I muttered, frowning when both the lights went out in the rooms. “Looks like whoever is up there spotted us.”

“It’s not really a rally, per se,” Red said while getting out of the driver’s seat and stretching. “Most tribes are actually pretty friendly with one another but still have a bad habit of killing each other. They meet here under a white flag and exchange resources, since they hunt in different territories and steal different things that the other tribes might need.”

“Sounds like a peachy ordeal,” I said, standing. “But how many people can they really raid throughout the year?”

“You would be surprised,” Beck said, and I noticed her cock a wicked looking handgun before holstering it on her hip. “It’s way too early for the raider meet, though, so Jericho and I are going to take a look while you humans stay here.”

“Not a chance,” Blu said.

“Agreed,” Piper weighed in.

“We don’t know who or what’s up there, geniuses,” Beck told them. “We’ll fly up there, take a look, kill a few people, and be back in a few minutes.”

Everyone started protesting at once, and I heard Blu’s mind going overtime on degrading names directed toward a certain synthetic woman. I was too busy frowning in thought about Beck mentioning that we were going to just fly up to
