“I see you continue to live up to our expectations, Henry,” Saren told him when he was done. There was no way he could cover everything, but ten minutes had given the SpaceDiv commander the key points as he saw them.

“We got lucky,” he admitted. “We had the opportunity to engage the Enigmas with a major numerical advantage and assess their capabilities in a lower-threat environment. It cost more than I wanted, but that knowledge saved us in Londar.”

They’d lost the destroyer Dragoon and three hundred of her crew in their first clash with the Enigma ships in Zal. They’d only lost ninety-eight hands across the entire Task Group in the battle at Londar—thanks to the knowledge they’d gained from Dragoon’s death.

“The treaty you’ve signed, Sylvia, sounds like exactly what we were after,” the Admiral continued. “Wheels are turning here. Depending on how long you have the link available for, we’re trying to put together at least a kitchen-cabinet meeting of the Security Council and UPSF Command.”

“We have about eleven hours until we hit the skip line,” Henry said. “We may have to cut the line prior to that if someone shows up, but we should be able to keep the ansible up until we leave the star system. After this system, our ability to raise the ansible is… uncertain. We are traveling through friendly stars, but if we want to keep this secret, well.”

“You need time without friends,” Saren concluded. “Not sure of the timing yet, as I said, but we should have key people available inside that time slot. Keep yourselves ready to take the call.”

“Of course,” Sylvia confirmed before Henry said a word.

“I have one question for you, Admiral,” Saren said. “And yes, I do want an immediate answer, though I expect both of us to chew on it before the larger meeting.

“Given that it will take seventy-five to eighty days, plus preparation time, for us to get additional ships out to you… should we be preparing a full fleet to reinforce you? The treaty has committed us to war alongside the Londu. Your ships were chosen to serve as much as an experiment as a fighting force.

“If it’s war, I want to get proper carrier groups out there. They won’t be GMS ships, but I am reasonably sure I can break free one of the Crichtons and an unrefitted Lexington to anchor a fleet.”

Even ignoring whatever fighters the escorts carried, those two carriers would put two hundred SF-130 Lancers into space—a force that could easily handle multiple Enigma battleships.

“There are a lot of moving pieces to that question, ser,” he told Saren slowly. “The Londu have a lot of ships under construction in Londar. Give them three months and they’ll have at least four—and possibly eight—gravity-shielded battleships with their new ion beams.

“It might be that if we can’t help them in the next three months, there’s no point in sending that help. But… I think we’re better sending it and not needing it than not sending it and losing a powerful future ally for want of a nail.
