Part Two

Chapter Twenty-Nine

Celebration

Alex was torn about whether or not they should leave immediately for Winten-ah. He still didn’t completely trust Mandran to keep his word and wasn’t really interested in rubbing their victory in his face.

He needn’t have worried. Within an hour of Torana’s defeat, the army was on the move to parts unknown. Mandran’s leg injury kept him from riding his magnificent warhorse and so he was carried on a platform by four of his soldiers. By the time the sun was high in the sky, there was no trace of the army.

The three tribes were not in such a hurry to leave. Hunters went out and returned with passels of giant pheasants and an elk. The bonfire in the middle of the valley turned into a celebration. There was none of their fermented drink, but it didn’t matter. Everyone was drunk on the possibilities of their life being given back to them. They feasted, danced, and sang songs until the night was nearly gone.

Nonetheless, they were up and moving about before too much of the morning had passed.

Tinta-ak, Fantam-eh, and the rest of the Franta-ah that had come to Alex’s rescue, turned to the east, to their home.

Alex laid his hand on Tinta-ak’s shoulder. “None of this would have happened if you hadn’t answered our call.”

Tinta-ak did not disagree.

“If you ever need anything,” Alex went on, “just send a runner to Winten-ah. You know we will be there for you.”

The Winten-ah and Danta-ah trekked back to the cliffside. It had seemed like it was a great distance when they were fleeing from the army, but the return trip passed quickly.

Sekun-ak had worried the entire trip home about what the invaders might have done to their cliffside home. They were unlikely to have hurt the caves themselves any more than they already had when they had destroyed the waterfall.

“But what else might they have done?” he had asked Alex. “Killed our animals? Ruined our stores of food?”

As soon as they walked up from the field into the cliffside, he saw that his worries were over nothing. The caves were exactly as they had left them.

Harta-ak, Versa-eh, and the rest of the Danta-ah only paused briefly at the cliffside. They were also relieved to see that the army had not done damage to Winten-ah. It bode well for their own home in the caldera.

The two of them, along with Sekun-ak, Alex, Amy, Sanda and Monda-ak gathered in the biggest cave and looked out over the field. Aside from the fact that the grass was somewhat damaged from having so many living on it, the view was unchanged.

“I have a favor to ask,” Alex said to Harta-ak and Versa-eh.

“Anything. You know that,” they answered in unison, then smiled.

“I know you’ll want to start rebuilding right away when you get home. We did some damage during the rescue. Even so, can Klipta-ak stay here?”

“Of course,” Harta-ak answered. “He is still our chief builder, but he is getting older and he has trained many capable workers to come along behind him.
