Chapter eighteen

Admiral One Rait Dea was so angry she clenched her teeth fiercely and her teeth hurt.

The Maeghen Cleric waived her hands and shouted, spittle spraying out of her fat face, “What in Lor’s name does it take to kill one small ship? Really! Admiral, you should be ashamed of your so called fleet. Your people are incompetent, or liars and traitors. He can’t be that good.”

Dea responded quietly and with an intent focus, “He is that GOOD. Remember, I warned you specifically about waking the old Warrior, Tor Benet. I am fearful we may have already done that. What you saw and what he did is exactly the kind of tactics and strategy he used to win all of those battles. Yes, he is that good.”

The Cleric shouted her disdain, “Kill them, kill them all. We must kill them or we will lose the Rift.”

Admiral Dea shook her head, her face still red under her short, cream fur, “We are not at the Juncture yet. We have time and will open the Rift when needed. We NEED the relics and we need to… accumulate the conscripts for their spiritual essence. Where are you with that?”

The Cleric raged, pointing her finger in anger, “Oh, no. Do not change the subject on me Rait. Do not dare to cross me or I will waste you when we are done and She Who Is The Darkness prevails in this universe.”

Rait Dea smiled thinly and leaned forward, “It is you who are wasting time and blaming others for your failure. I am a House elite, do not speak to me that way. I will have you removed and jailed right now for your traitorous behavior. We are supposed to be working together for the Order and you are failing to uphold your part of the effort. You are failing to steal the conscripts we need to harness their spiritual energy. If we fail it will be your doing, not mine.”

The Cleric was so furious she could not speak.

Dea continued, “Do not dare to accuse me, the Admiralty or Space Fleet Operations of incompetence. The ships we just lost were highly trained crews. The pirates we use are also skilled at intercepting and taking their prey. He is that good.”

Dea took a deep breath and pursed her lips, “We know he went out to a transit point. We don’t know where he went from there. There aren’t that many transit points or destinations on the track he took. We will look for him. I will not have him killed when he is inbound again. That would not be fortuitous. He is that good.”

The Maeghen Cleric was startled, “By Lor, Dea, we need him dead. Why are you now going to stop trying to kill him? Are you weak?”

Admiral Rait Dea looked carefully at the Cleric, “Why lose more ships when I can kill him on the ground.”

Admiral Dea smiled thinly, “That is my plan. Now, make yours, or the Order will replace you. There are plenty of Sisters of the Light who would easily relish your position.
