Chapter Thirteen
The lift doors opened onto the Imperial Deck. First, it was her voice that I heard. âYou can put her in the dress over there.â Scanning, I found her. She was the most beautiful sight upon which Iâd grown forlorn of seeing.
âWhy that one?â Chef asked.
âBecause her hair is green. She donât look good in red. Sheâs better in blue, green, or yellow.â
âWhy does your doll get the red dress?â he asked.
âShe has pink hair,â she said, as if that explained everything.
My steps took me closer, drawn by the sound of my daughterâs voice as she explained her fashion choices to a grown male, a retired Parvac warrior. As I came within a foot of her, my knees lost all feeling as if a force from the deck had drained them and dragged them down. On my knees at her side, I reached out and stroked her soft, dove-grey hair. With my deepest wish fulfilled, my eyes began to fill with tears of gratitude.
Turning her face to me, Neema scowled and wrinkled her nose. âMommy, I love you so much, too.â Leaning closer, she whispered, âYou smell like Daddy after heâs been fighting.â She shook her head and pointed toward my quarters. âGo shower and change.â
Tilting my head back, I laughed harder than Iâd ever laughed in my life. Wiping my eyes on my flight suitâs sleeve, I got to my feet and tugged a grinning Clark along with me to the shower. We tossed our flight suits into the cleaning unit and got inside of the shower where we took turns scrubbing each otherâs backs.
Eventually, I made my way back to Neema fresh, clean, and dressed in something which I hoped would be more to her liking. Iâd paired the long, flowing, vibrant-blue and very expensive Arachnean Silk skirt with an inexpensive long-sleeved white T-shirt on which there was a picture of a purple octopus swimming through blue water around a colorful coral reef. It had been something Iâd picked up from a gift shop on Epopeus. On a whim, Iâd found some of my coral jewelry from Thalassa and put it on to properly accessorize. Rather than going around barefoot, Iâd slipped on some white exercise shoes. Following my lead, Clark had dressed in civilian clothing as well, black pants and a blue silk sweater. Our fashion choices were a statement. Weâd both had enough of soldiering for the day.
Getting up and running over to me, she stopped short, narrowed her eyes, and sniffed. After determining with her senses that I was no longer offensive, she proceeded to give me ample hugs and kisses. âMommy, that was scary! There was a big boom! Then, then, Mommy, then the ship went woo, woo, woo! Like it was on the water getting bumped up and down on big waves! Then, then, it shook and shivered before it stopped. It was so many smacking sounds too, like big rain hitting us! Did you hear it? Did you?â
Kneeling before her, I took her hands.
