Through these three stages, Joey’s perception of the human world is depicted. The horse does not judge those around them according to their actions or beliefs, but just according to their feelings or attitudes towards him: this characteristic can be seen from the very beginning of the story when he immediately recognises that Zoey will be his ally and when he can tell that Albert’s father is dangerous and gets rid of him by bucking him. This trend continues to appear throughout the story: Albert’s sincerity, Nicholls’ loyalty, the good-heartedness of Emilie’s grandfather, Friedrich’s lucidity, etc. are all examples of behaviour that the horse trusts and that make up a chorus of voices that speak out against the absurdity of war. These voices send a universal message as they belong to protagonists from all the countries involved in the battle.

Joey, with his perception of things, is only interested in humans and is not interested in the context of the war. It seems to him to be a routine he gets used to without reflecting on it in the same way as his human friends:

“I began at last to settle into the work [...] I began to appreciate the good food and the grooming and the buffing up, all the unending attention and care that was devoted to me. As the days passed I began to think less and less [...] of my early life [...] the unerring routine of the work that was turning me imperceptibly into an army horse [...]I was already quite resigned to, even contented in my new life” (pp. 19-20).
