Chapter 32

H

[Outpost Delta

Galactic World Order Safe House

Dark Space]

Flames danced in the background of the vehicle recently wrecked as H stood on the side of the road. His shirt was torn and bloody, and his shoes were gone as sweat dripped down his back. He lifted his hands to his face, noticing they were filthy, worn, and painful. The flames reflected off his eyes as he watched the interior burn… Something was inside of the car. He didn't know what it was, but his chest hurt, and his breathing became labored. His eyes widened as the flames grew—and that was when he realized the vehicle was a hover skiff belonging to a young David Aethon.

H shot up in bed, breathing so hard he was on the verge of hyperventilating. Sweat stained his shirt, soaking through to his bed. Looking around the room, H remembered he was at Outpost Delta. He took a few moments to calm himself, taking deep breaths in and out…repeating the process until his mind was tempered. Shaking his head, H placed his feet on the ground and stood. He walked over to the bathroom, relieved himself in the toilet, and then turned toward the mirror. “It was just a dream, you fucking asshole… Just a dream.”

H turned the sink on and let the water warm. Cupping the water, he washed his face, then took a few more deep breaths. Nightmares had been a part of his life since he was a child, but the constant combat exacerbated them.

His room was silent and mostly dark, all but for a motion light strip on the bathroom counter.

“Wardy,” H called out as he pulled on a fresh t-shirt. “I need some coffee.” His sleeping shirt was drenched with sweat and felt like a washcloth.

Wardy came to life as his holding room door opened. He rolled out, turning immediately toward H’s room. “Do you need my assistance, sir?”

“Yeah, Wardy, I need a cup of fucking coffee. I know it’s four a.m. That’s why I need my damn coffee. Show me where it’s at, will ya?” H asked.

“That’s no problem, sir. I’m here to assist you in any way possible,” Wardy said.

The droid rolled out in front of H, leading him toward the exit door. The door opened, and they moved into the hallway.

“Just follow me, sir. The mess hall is right around the corner.” Wardy rolled with vigor across the fine carpet.

Mess hall, why didn't I think of that? Probably because it’s four a.m.

H followed Wardy, thinking about what he needed to do that day. He had awakened from that nightmare and wanted to touch base with Aethon to make sure he was all right. That would be at the top of his list for the morning chores.

“Wardy, are you assigned to assist me or to assist anyone that comes to room 227?” H asked as he followed.

“Sir, I’m Wardy, your personnel assistance droid. My job is to show you around the outpost and make sure you get settled in.”

“Yeah, you’ve mentioned that, Wardy.
