“Damn!” Clay shouted, twisting his fighter away from a particularly close shot. “Jess, did you hear me? I can’t get close to the Wanderer without being destroyed.”

“Sorry,” replied Jess. “Yes, I heard you. Give me a minute.”

“I’m not sure you’re going to have that long,” Clay replied. “Looks like you’re even more popular than we thought!”

Another twenty or so Banshees had arrived, or possibly had just dropped their stealth. Clay almost preferred it when they were invisible, at least he didn’t know quite how much danger they were in.

“Clay, you need to get out of here,” Jess sent. “Right now. Get as much distance between us as you can.”

“What?”

“Trust me, Clay. It’s the only way.”

Clay made his decision immediately, turning his fighter away though still keeping it jumping around enough to avoid anything but a lucky shot striking.

“Jess,” he sent. “If you can’t save me then just get the hell out of here. Don’t put the Wanderer and everyone aboard in danger just to save me.”

“I don’t intend to. Damn… shields just dropped below fifty percent. There’s too many of them now. All right, we’ll have to do this now. Clay, when I give you the signal you have to fly absolutely straight and level, no matter what. Even if something’s about to hit you do not veer off.”

“What? How long for?”

“No more than three seconds. Four at the most.”

“That could be a lifetime right now!”

“I know. You have to trust me. Are you ready?”

“Damn it. I’m as ready as I’ll ever be, though if you’re doing what I think you are I might be better off taking my chances with the Banshees.”

“Funny! Right… three… two… one… now!”

Clay flipped his fighter back onto a straight flight path. Every nerve in his body was screaming at him, every shred of experience was telling him what he was doing was suicidal. He ignored them all.

The Banshees took nearly two seconds to react to the sudden change. Until then they kept shooting at where they thought he might be dodging. Then what he’d been dreading happened. One of the Banshees fired directly at him, or at where he would be at least. If he didn’t change course he was sure to be killed and the blasts were going to strike well before Jess’s three second deadline.

He wanted to turn away. No, he needed to, but he fought the urge. He wanted to tell Jess not to blame himself but there was barely time to frame the thought, let alone to send it.

The strikes slammed into his fighter, slamming it forwards and to the side. His body flinched, but somehow he kept his eyes open. He would stare death in the eye, spit in its face one last time.

The ship rocked and shook some more, then came to an abrupt stop which slammed Clay against the back of the seat. Despite the padding he was dazed enough to hear ringing in his ears and have his vision narrow down to a tunnel.

It took him
