CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
With the addition of Josh and Gail, watches were shortened. Ryan took the first watch, with Becca following. Josh was next, Gail after him. Mick and Sarah rounded out the night. With the exception of Ryan, everyone settled in their sleeping pallets, the late summer night bringing a bit of a chill. Sarah lay on her side, thinking about Gail and Josh. So far, they hadn’t added much value to their group, had actually caused problems. Sarah hoped that would change. If they continued to make things dangerous, she was all for cutting them loose. Survival of the fittest.
Sarah’s internal alarm kicked in and she woke up about fifteen minutes before her shift was to start. Muttering to herself, she uncurled herself from the warmth of the blankets and stepped over the sleeping bodies. Rubbing the sleep from her eyes, she yawned and made her way to the front of the building. The low murmur of a voice came to her and she stopped, puzzled. Was Mick talking to himself? She started walking again.
No. It was Gail. Neither of them looked up as she approached. Finally, she said, “Hey. My shift.”
Mick and Gail looked up. Gail’s eyes narrowed. Mick smiled. “Hey, Sarah. Is it that time already?”
“Yeah, it is.” She forced a smile on her face. “I’m sure you’re tired, so go on to bed. I’ve got it.”
Gail laughed. “I was still pretty wired after my shift so I stayed up to talk to Mick about Wallbanger. Didn’t even notice it was so late.” She stretched, brushing against Mick. “Come on, Mick. Let’s hit the sack.”
“You go on, Gail. I’ll stay up with Sarah,” he said. “We keep each other company during watch all the time, don’t we, Sarah?”
“Yup.”
Gail looked from Mick to Sarah. “Well, I’m not that tired,” she said. “I can stay up with you, too.”
“Nah, you should go to bed,” Mick said. “Get some rest, at least. I’ll probably head in myself in just a little bit.”
“Or I could go to bed until you two decide what you’re doing,” Sarah said through gritted teeth. She’d had about enough of Gail and Mick wasn’t far behind.
“No, no.” Gail stood up from her spot next to Mick on the floor. “I’ll go in. Have a good night, Mick, Sarah.”
“’Night, Gail,” Mick said. “Thanks for keeping me company.”
“Sure thing, Mick.” She waggled her fingers at him as she headed back to the sleeping area.
Sarah muttered a good night, and then plopped down on a chair. “You don’t have to stay up with me, Mick,” she said as she searched the drawers of the desk in front of her. “I’m sure you’re tired.”
“Who’s Chuck?”
Sarah’s head flew up. “What?”
“Who’s Chuck?” Mick got up from his spot on the floor and straddled a chair. He wheeled it over to where she was sitting. “The guy who was going to take you to see Wallbanger.” He folded his arms over the back of the chair.
“Oh.” Sarah blinked. “He was in my art history class.
