While Meeks and Rita explored the lower level of the constable’s house, Nicki and I assisted Monte upstairs. Although the dwarf had regained consciousness, he was still far too weak and injured to go anywhere on his own.

“No, not this one,” he mumbled as Nicki and I turned toward the nearest empty bedroom. “The one at the far end. The master. Only seems right after all that jerk put me through.”

I chuckled. “You really have been here before.”

“Not the first time I’ve swiped that moron’s key.”

Nicki smiled. “Aren’t you just full of surprises?”

He grinned impishly.

“Now, I understand why he and his men attacked you,” I joked. “He’s got enough self-awareness to remember troublemakers.”

“Maybe,” Monte conceded. “But his punishment was definitely worse than any of my crimes.”

“No kidding,” Nicki said. “Time for a little payback.”

She and I guided Monte to the master bedroom, as requested, and laid him gently on the constable’s ostentatious, four-poster bed. It seemed like a comfortable spot to recuperate, and as a bonus, our patient would likely leave behind a slew of blood stains on the pricey silk sheets.
