Chapter 13 - Susan

Susan set out the plates, cutlery, and napkins before standing back to survey her handiwork. The food was ready and sat in the middle of the table, along with a selection of condiments. They’d managed to whip up a stack of pancakes with butter, syrup, and canned strawberries. There was also a big bowl of scrambled eggs with veggies, or mishmash eggs, as Ellen called it.

“Here we go,” Ellen said, adding two jugs of reconstituted orange juice and two more jugs filled with water.

“The coffee is ready, I made tea, and I washed all the dishes,” Amelia said, wiping her hands with a dishcloth.

“Excellent. Thank you so much, guys,” Susan said. “Let’s take a break before the first lot arrive.”

“Sounds like a plan,” Ellen said, pouring each of them a cup of coffee. They sat down around the table and fell into a companionable silence. The stresses of the night before melted away as the hot brew warmed their stomachs, and Susan heaved a sigh of relief. “I’m glad it’s over.”

“Me too,” Ellen said. “But we paid a heavy price last night.”

“Yes, we did,” Amelia said, her expression sad. “It will take a while before we recover as a group.”

“Yes, but I also think things could have gone a lot worse, and it still might in the days to come,” Susan said. “We’re still at the beginning of the apocalypse.”

“Yes, if you look at the math, the odds are not in our favor,” Amelia said. “Once this infection hits maximum saturation, there will be millions, even billions of them, and just a few of us.”

“That’s comforting,” Ellen said in a wry voice.

“Amelia has always been good with numbers,” Susan said. “At least we have one thing the zombies don’t have. Brains.”

“It’s always been that way for humanity. We started with nothing but our intelligence and became the apex predator on the planet,” Amelia mused. “Now the zombies are the apex predators.”

“Not if we can help it, right?” Susan asked.

“Right,” Amelia said with a determined nod.

“What did I miss?” Ruby asked, entering the kitchen.

“Breakfast is ready if you’re hungry,” Susan said.

“I’m starving,” Ruby said.

“How’s George doing?” Amelia asked.

“He’s sleeping. I gave him as much pain medication as I dared, and he’s off in dreamland,” Ruby said. “Other than that, he’s stable.”

“I’ll pray for a quick recovery,” Ellen said.

“I just hope we got the arm off in time,” Ruby said. “If the infection managed to spread….”

“Shouldn’t he be in quarantine?” Ellen asked. “What if he attacks Theresa?”

“Theresa is ready for it,” Ruby said. “She’ll manage.”

“George will be fine,” Susan said with as much confidence as she could muster. Despair never did any good; she’d had enough of the glum expressions. “Coffee or tea, Ruby?”

“Tea, please,” Ruby said, taking a seat.

Susan poured her a cup and waved at the food. “We might as well eat. The rest will show up when they’re done doing whatever they’re doing.”

“Don’t mind if I do,” Ellen said, grabbing a plate. She piled it high with food and crammed a mouthful of pancakes and syrup into her mouth.
