Chapter 20

Ricki walked into the lab and stopped dead in her tracks at the sight of Anchorman and Cheron standing nose to nose, glaring at each other. Granted, her cook had to bend down to match Cheron’s shorter height, but their noses were only a few inches apart, and neither looked as if they were willing to back off.

Cheron wedged a hand between them and gave Anchorman’s chest a hard shove. “I’m perfectly capable of taking out the trash.”

He didn’t budge. “That bag is too heavy. I told you, I’ll do all the lifting. All you need to do is sit and point.”

“That’s ridiculous!”

“You just got out of the hospital.”

Cheron’s eyes narrowed behind the lenses of her glasses. “For observation. Which they did. And nothing’s wrong with me.” She reached for the large trash bag lying on the floor at her feet, struggling to lift it, which immediately launched a tug-of-war between them.

“Give that to me,” Anchorman growled. “It’s my job to see that you don’t do too much, and to make sure no one gets hurt. Which includes you.”

Giving up, Cheron let go of the bag and put her hands on her hips. “Also ridiculous. As you saw for yourself, I have a gun.”

“Which you did pretty well with, except for the part where you waved it around after the cops arrived.” Anchorman easily tossed the heavy bag behind him. “I’m putting proper gun handling lessons on my to-do list.”

Spotting John standing several feet away, leaning against one of the cleared-off lab tables, Ricki walked over and joined him. Finn followed along behind, a huge grin on his face.

“What’s going on?” Ricki asked.

“Nothing much.” John looked around Ricki and returned Finn’s amused smile. “He wants her to sit down, and she doesn’t want to.”

“How long have they been going at it?” she asked.

John’s quiet chuckle had both agents staring at him. “Since they stopped arguing about breakfast. Anchorman wanted her to have some steak and eggs, which he offered to prepare himself over one of those small lab burners she keeps around here, and she said the bagel and coffee she’d eaten at the hospital was more than enough.”

“Cooking a steak over a Bunsen burner? The man’s toast,” Finn stated before breaking into laughter.

John nodded and his smile widened. “It’s good Cheron will have someone so strong to look after her.”

Looking at the two people glaring at each other, Ricki wanted to slap a hand against her forehead. “Now it’s you two who are being ridiculous. We’ll be lucky if Cheron doesn’t deck him right before she insists he get out of her lab.” She looked over at Finn. “Which means one of us will have to take over bodyguard duty, and by that, I mean you.”

“It will be up to Anchorman to convince her that she does not want to do that,” John said.

Finn reached into his pocket and withdrew several bills folded in half. He peeled off a twenty and slapped it on the table behind them. “I’m putting my money on the doc.
