Chapter 7

Micah guessed he’d been about eight years old when his father returned from Vietnam after being a POW for three years. His mother had flown out to Fort Bragg, and Micah stayed with his grandparents, waiting for their return. No one had known how bad it might be. Would the Vietcong have scoured out the man Matthew Micah had been and turned him hollow? What tortures had he endured, and would he wrestle with them every night for the rest of his life?

The sunlight slanting in across the green-patterned carpet, the murmur of voices, and the smell of perfume against the redolence of fear rushed back to Micah as he sat on the grass, watching his captors, Genghis and Nazar, argue. Genghis shouted, gesturing toward Micah, Conner, and Lew, spittle forming around his mouth.

“Send me a sign of your favor. Then those who hate me will be put to shame, for you, O Lord, help and comfort me.”

Memories swept him from the drama before him, took him back to the embrace of his father as Micah shipped off to basic training. “May God give you an undivided heart, Jimmy,” his father had said, his hazel eyes shining. “May your heart and your mind thirst for God alone. And then, whatever they do to you, you will find peace.”

For the first time, Micah wondered what kind of peace his father meant. He had a feeling it didn’t mean safety. Or a warm bed. Or even enough food to keep his gut from roaring.

Somehow his father had hung on to that peace, even while roasting in a hot box in Vietnam. At one time, Micah had thought it was a feeling. Something sweet and warm that filled his chest. Usually when he was around Lacey, but also after church or sometimes during Sunday dinner around the table with his family.

But sweetness wasn’t the feeling that rushed over him when Genghis strode toward him now. Micah tensed as the man fisted his hair and yanked his head back. He watched without flinching as Genghis pulled out his saber and shook it before Micah’s eyes.

Exactly what magic had his father possessed that had kept him sane? Because at the moment, the only thing that filled Micah’s brain was the fact that his decisions had not only destroyed the Raptor—a pricey piece of U.S. hardware—but were about to cost the lives of himself and his fellow Green Berets.

What a hero. And sorry, but that didn’t give him any warm fuzzies in his soul.

He fought to gather his feet under him as Genghis hauled him up. Nazar stepped close to him. The sun had begun to tuck behind the mountains, and a chill raised gooseflesh on Micah’s skin. Somewhere nearby, a fire cooked lamb over a spit.

“We have recovered the airplane. And the box. If you can fix it, you will live.”

Micah licked his lips, searching for a reply. “Conner is the only one who can fix it.” He shot a look at his injured specialist, who frowned at him from his prone position.
