Chapter Seventeen
True to her word, Mori allowed Torrin to go back to her ship, then escorted her through the system to Haefen. Flying past planets with a League ship on her tail that wasn’t chasing her felt very strange. She checked the ship’s power signatures constantly to make sure the Icarus wasn’t preparing to fire on her. The Bonaparte, the other League ship on the blockade, didn’t harass her when she slipped into Haefen’s orbit, but she didn’t breathe a sigh of relief until she had entered the blue planet’s atmosphere. Mori had upheld her side of the bargain; it was up to Torrin to reciprocate.
“Melisende, come in please.” The comm crackled to life as she approached Fort Marshall.
“Melisende here, Torrin Ivanov on the comm.”
“You are cleared to land, Miss Ivanov. Central Command requests that you attend him immediately upon landing.”
So much for seeing Jak right away, not that Torrin knew where to look for her. She would have to ask Callahan where Jak was recovering. That’s right, Torrin told herself; she was going to see him because it would get her to Jak faster, for no other reason.
“Affirmative. Inform the general that I will see him within twenty minutes.”
“Understood. Marshall Flight Command out.”
She landed the Melisende next to the Jane without a hitch.
She knew the route to the general’s offices and made her way there at the fastest clip she could manage, arriving at the building sweaty and gasping. Taking only a moment to regain her breath, Torrin entered the building and took the stairs two at a time up to Callahan’s floor.
“Miss Ivanov,” Callahan’s clerk greeted her with reserve. “The general will see you soon. You may be seated.” He waved vaguely in the direction of the chairs while looking inward. Torrin recognized the look on his face; he was hooked into the net.
I don’t think so. Confident that she would have a moment before he realized she was heading right in, Torrin pushed past his desk and through the door to Callahan’s office.
“Torrin!” Callahan seemed pleased to see her. “I had no idea you were here. Have a seat.” He pressed a button on his desk. “Anders, hold all my calls.”
“So what’s the big rush?”
“I thought you might want to know that Captain Stowell has come through his surgery successfully.” Catching Torrin’s questioning look, he smiled wryly. “I find it easier to keep Stowell’s secret intact if I continue to refer to him in the masculine.”
“I see.” Torrin wondered what Jak would think of that.
“He’s been assigned as your liaison with the Central Command Council.” His normally genial facade dropped. “Recent events have taught us that we need to engage in some contingency planning. We aren’t willing to lose the equipment you’ve contracted to provide us, not when we’ve paid such a steep price.”
“That’s an excellent plan, General. I’ll make sure I talk it over with her. Contingencies need to be set up on my end as well and I want to make sure they mesh well with your plans.
