Chapter 14

“Sit here while I get us some food. Do not move, no matter what,” Kai orders, leaving me at the table we sat at last night. The tables all around us are full, and it makes me think that this table is reserved for him somehow.

Looking around, I try to guess what powers everyone has, but no one is using them. Or so I think...until my top starts to smoke. Jumping up, I scream as it lights on fire, falling as the knee pads don’t allow me to stand.

“Get it off! OWW! Stop!” I scream, trying to pull the burning garment from me. A sudden splash of water douses the fire as a very irate Kai storms over to me.

“Who is responsible for this?” He roars, picking me up and setting me on his lap. He carefully pulls the shirt off me, hissing as he sees the red skin that is already starting to blister. Looking around the room, he meets each person's eyes, his voice icy cold. “I want to know who did this, now! Cyra? Miri? Egan? Pele? Tyson?”

The crowd either looks at their plates or tries to leave without Kai noticing. But no one responds to Kai’s demands.

“I need to get her to Drummer. You will not leave until I return and find out who did this!” Kai gently stands up, careful to not let anything touch my chest and stomach. He whispers just loudly enough for me to hear, “Shh! It’ll be okay.”

Silent tears roll down my face. I can’t tell if it is the physical pain or the emotional pain that hurts more. I don’t understand how people can hate me so much when they don’t even know me. Or how they can find humor or even enjoyment in the torture that they put me through.

“I know it hurts. Drummer will fix it.” Kai is almost running, his voice soft and soothing. “I will find out who did this. It is one thing if I or Aragorn punish you, but they may not cause you physical harm. They know the score.”

“D-Don’t,” I stutter. “Hate me enough. Let go.” It is an effort to speak, the pain in my chest is so intense. The small burns that I have gotten lighting a candle or baking are nothing to this. It feels as if someone has put hot coals on my chest.

“I can’t do that,” he whispers, pushing open the doors to medical. “Drummer! Get out here!”

“Coming, coming!” Drummer calls from a back room. “What is so—?” His words cut off as he sees me, his manner switching to one of efficiency. “Lay her down on the table. Little one, who did this to you?”

“She doesn’t know, but you can bet your ass I will find out who.” Kai’s face resembles a thundercloud, making me shiver in fear.

“Why care?” I manage to get out through clenched teeth. Drummer is cleaning the burns, the pad with some kind of cleaner that removes the skin. If he hadn’t sprayed a numbing agent beforehand, I would probably be passed out from the pain.
