Chapter Seventeen

Terrible circumstances called for decisive action and Keller was not afraid to commit. She recalled her recent meeting with Cody in which he’d talked about the possibility of a safe zone somewhere close to the pyramid. The unproven, speculated-upon possibility of a safe zone. With two huge enemy battleships flying through that exact place.

“Lieutenant Holverson, how long until they activate the kill?”

“Any time from now, Captain.”

Missiles rained down upon the Devastator’s shields, reducing them to fifty percent. The combat was taking its toll on the other spaceships. The Hadron Earth Light’s shield sent a warning of imminent collapse across the battle network and the Ghast Cadaverons Renval and Dromant were awash with plasma.

All the while, missiles and energy beams stabbed through space, accompanied by the non-stop fusillade from thousands of Vule cannons and Bulwarks.

The comms channel to the Trivanor was still open.

“Are you ready, Tarjos? We’re going in close.”

The Ghast laughed, exactly like Keller expected him to. “We await your codes.”

“You will need to get us through those doors.”

“We will make a hole wide enough to fit twenty interstellars!”

Keller sent a synch code over the battle network and activated it immediately. The attack fleet crossed millions of kilometres and re-entered local space. The sensors updated and the Devastator’s crew did their best to react.

“Disengaging formation lock,” said Keller at once.

“We’re sixty thousand klicks from the Hyranus,” said Meade. “The closest of those big battleships is at…crap…ten thousand klicks.”

“We left one hundred and three Scion battleships behind us, Captain,” added Hudson. “They just activated their stop defence.”

“I can confirm the activation of kill,” said Holverson. “We aren’t dead, so I’d say we got out in the nick of time.”

“Out of the frying pan…” Venters began. “Target lock obtained on Big Bastard #1. Firing everything we’ve got.”

The next two minutes were filled with savagery. The enemy megaships were every bit as fearsome as their size suggested. Their mighty gauss turrets shook with recoil as they hurled heavy projectiles into the attack fleet, and Keller lost count of the number of missiles they fired. A dozen red beams jumped amongst the human and Ghast ships, draining the last vestiges from their energy shields.

The Oblivions Inviksilar, Sinatrar and Trivanor fired their ravagers. The destructive Obsidiar missiles crashed into the nearby megaship, engulfing it in darkness. When the sensor feed cleared, Keller saw with shock that the enemy spacecraft had survived the attack. Huge sections of its outer plating were missing, leaving it with a rough, uneven appearance and forks of dark energy spat and kicked over its hull.

The Gundar and Rapier performed a series of rapid short-range transits. Dumping incendiary cannisters and then disappearing into lightspeed once again. The detonations were huge and in moments, the enemy ships were lost in the centre of a black-specked raging inferno of intense blue fire, which clawed with insatiable hunger at the power reserves supporting their protective shields.

Once their incendiaries were delivered, the Retaliators converged their stasis emitters on the same enemy ship. If the weapon had any effect, the Scions shrugged them off with hardly an interruption.
