Chapter 11

The Ruin

Elowyn awoke refreshed and feeling more like herself than she had since before Cailean’s death. She realized she’d been dreaming. Nothing frightening or intense, nothing prophetic...just an ordinary dream. The details were already fading quickly, and holding onto them was like trying to grasp at smoke, but she remembered enough. There was a shallow stream full of colorful stones, surrounded by lush greenery. It was her stream, the one near her mother’s cottage in Tyroc, and seeing it again was like visiting an old friend she’d sorely missed. The sun was shining down through the trees, warming her skin, and the breeze had a familiar and comforting salt-tang.

But there was something else that her memory was trying to focus on. Trails of vine over bright tile, stone archways, a smooth basin overflowing with water... It was the ruined temple. Her dream had taken her there; she remembered now. She had washed in the basin, and drunk from the clean, sweet water in the well. And now that she was awake, she felt whole again. All of the lingering ache and fatigue from her journey had lifted away. She was hungry, too. Ravenous, in fact. She wolfed down her breakfast like a starved animal.

“I’m going exploring,” Elowyn called to Morganne over her shoulder as she raced out into the sunshine. She hadn’t given Morganne time enough to protest. This was the whole reason she had come with the Kinship to the tower in the first place. There was something in those woods for her to find, something she was supposed to see—the vision had said so. She didn’t have to go very far past the tower before she was completely immersed in a vast woodland. Her lungs drew in the fresh air greedily until they felt like they would burst. Out with the musty old tower air; in with the fragrant woodsy breezes. There was indeed much to explore, though she would have to be careful not to get lost.

Elowyn knew she should be looking for a ruin of some kind. Everything else about her vision had been right, so why wouldn’t that part of it be too? Only it hadn’t told her where to go, or how long it would take her to find it. There was a growing excitement in her heart—maybe this ruin would be like the one in Tyroc, which was a place of peace and beauty. She had felt protected there in the strength of Aviad’s presence. What wonders would this one hold? In her vision it had been barely recognizable; sunk down into the earth, and half buried under forest debris. She would enjoy clearing all of that away and discovering what was beneath it, just as she had in Tyroc.

She peered as far as she could see in every direction. No wisps, nor anyone else. She left markings for herself as she pushed deeper in. Soon she couldn’t see the tower anymore, and soon after that she couldn’t hear the sounds made by those working outside of it, either.
