Memory Five – Pebble

“Darios?”

I looked up from my studies. Yaden sat across from me at the desk in the library and had been doing his maths exercises.

Looking at him made me smile with accomplishment. The sad, much too thin kid from a year ago was almost gone. He had filled out nicely, no longer skin and bones. He had also gained a healthy colour where before he had seemed almost grey. His eyes sparkled with life and maybe even a little of the mischief one would expect of a boy his age.

“I'm done with my work,” he said, pushing his papers over for me to check them.

I glanced up at the ancient grandfather clock that dominated the space next to the fireplace. For a change, he had been fairly quick with his exercises. That meant either he had put his mind to them or he had been distracted again and they would be particularly sloppy.

Not that it mattered much. These days he wasn't tormented by tutors who forced him to learn his letters and numbers, but also tried to drum useless junk into his head like who had ruled what and when and how they had justified it. The problem wasn't even that Yaden was stupid – he had no trouble reciting every single battle of the Black-and-White War, when all black House Ndewane had defeated and eradicated predominantly white House Grebenstein. He could easily recall those dates, because his grandfather Dimitrios had been a part of, joining the war for House Quetzal to help end the fighting. At first, I had assumed Yaden had trouble because he simply had too many other things to pay attention to.

Since I was now in charge of his curriculum, I had decided he should focus on the basics. Maths, writing and reading, nothing else. His maths had improved a lot. His reading and writing, however, weren't getting any better. After much coaxing, he had explained that the letters didn't want to stay in one place and kept jumping all over the page and that it got worse the harder he tried. He said that it was the same as when the scholars from the Psions Guild had tried to teach him their way of doing psi. Concentrating didn't work for him. But while he already knew how to do psi and was sure his way was the right way, he had no clue how to translate that into reading or writing.

Unsure of how to proceed, I had brought the subject to the Duchess' attention.

She hadn't objected when I added books on learning disorders to my own study schedule. It turned out that the problems Yaden described were relatively well known. While there seemed to be no easy cure, there were various suggestions on how to deal with it – ranging from simply giving up on the student to strict discipline to the use of certain drugs that would 'fix the student's brain'. I certainly wasn't going to mess with the brain chemistry of one of humanity's greatest psions, and more discipline was the last thing he needed.
