Park

What the hell was that noise? High-pitched, fast, and coming their way.

His hackles rose, his back straightening and his shoulders arching out wide. “What—” he began.

He didn’t get the chance to finish.

The wrist device he’d taken from Vira suddenly beeped with an incoming message. It was from Admiral James Jones – one of the youngest and most respected admirals out there. Though he didn’t form part of the critical team that had shepherded Vira, he was still a goddamn high level member of the Academy.

And that – that made the message Park suddenly saw blinking across the Lieutenant’s wrist device all the harder to swallow. “Kill Princess Me’ac.”

Park jerked his head from the wrist device toward the Princess, then back toward the strange hum coming down the tunnel.

Vira couldn’t have been stiffer.

“Lieutenant Carlisle,” Park began, only just remembering to call her by her secret name. “I—”

“Take the Prince and Princess. Get them out of here.” With that, Vira quickly jerked to the side, rounded her hand into a fist, and struck it against the Lieutenant’s jaw.

The woman didn’t have a chance, and she was knocked unconscious immediately.

Though any combat specialist would know that you had to be damn careful about how you knocked somebody out – lest you did unintended damage and caused a vascular event – he had no doubt that Vira knew what she was doing.

As soon as the Lieutenant was unconscious, Vira twirled hard on her foot and raced forward.

“Vira,” he thought at her. “Get back here. Don’t do anything stupid,” he tried.

She was already out of sight.

He paused there, teetering on the spot, unsure of what to do. On the one hand, he now appreciated he had to keep Princess Me’ac safe. On the other, he couldn’t forget his primary duty was to ensure that Vira didn’t do anything that would reveal her abilities.

“What’s going on?” came the Princess’ quick, strangled voice.

“What was that noise? Why did Lieutenant Carlisle knock out our witness?” Prince Nax’et spat, his anger growing with every second.

The Prince looked ready to snap. And it wasn’t just out of anger – but pure desperation.

The wrist device beeped again, and Park jerked his head down to see another message jump across it. “You have a minute to ensure Princess Me’ac is dead.”

Prince Nax’et saw the message coming in, and he jerked toward it. Before Park could pull his hand out of the way and cover the screen of the wrist device, Prince Nax’et saw.

He paled. “She’s the target?” He pointed at Princess Me’ac.

“You two need to come with me right now,” Park said. He pulled out the gun that was holstered at his back.

Prince Nax’et took one look at it, over to the Princess, then back to Park, and the Prince let out a snarl. “I’ll take my chances on my own,” he spat. “I’m going back to safety,” he added as he whirled on his foot and jerked forward.

“No. Get back here. I can’t protect you both at once –” Park began, even though it was clear that it was the Princess who was the target, not the arrogant Nax’et.
