The gang used the sewers to escape. Dan took a short route to a manhole located directly under Rhino, while Opal and Cyron went another way.
No words could really describe the smell underground, but at least the giant rats did not take much interest in their unusual guests. At first, Bossman had some worries about mutant crocodiles, or perhaps turtles, but he kept those to himself.
The coupled trudged in the mucky sewage, using night-vision goggles to see in the total darkness, and John’s Less-A-Stink nasal filters, to minimize the effect of the surrounding odors. The sounds of their footsteps echoed in the empty underground halls. Cyron had a mental image of the path they were supposed to take, but every now and then he would stop, and consult a digital map on his Fist Jockey.
After an hour or so, they reached a large junction, which contained four stone platforms, connected by narrow wooden planks. The area was dimly lit by pale beams of moonlight that came through narrow slits in the ceiling, and the sound of flowing sludge could be heard from nearby, where the current became stronger.
Bossman checked the map again, and then started crossing one of the planks. However, before he could set foot on solid stone again, a bright light was suddenly turned on, blinding them both momentarily.
Opal quickly grabbed Cyron’s arm, and helped him regain balance. Then they both took the light-sensitive goggles off, and tried to figure out the source of the beam.
Fifty feet away, blocking the path forward, was a muscular man, with an overdeveloped upper body, and a mighty square chin. He wore white tights, red boots, blue gloves… and a yellow hard hat with a spotlight on it.
