St Mary’s Church

The first church here was Norman, completed in 1150. Made from Tadcaster stone it was unflatteringly described as ‘rude and massive’ with oak pews. Rebuilt in 1801 it failed to impress the then vicar, the Revd John Hodgkinson who found it ‘entirely wanting in architectural or ecclesiastical style’. He got his chance to remedy when he was heavily involved in another rebuilding in 1863. Sir Gilbert Scott designed what is the present church in the Early Decorated style costing £1523 12s 6d raised by subscription. A new vestry and floor were added in 1974.
