On weekends, I enjoy walking, swimming in the summer, cooking, reading, and my most recent experiments, learning how to paint, ice-skate and play the Spanish guitar. My favorite hobby is entertaining my young nephews. My sister Dora moved to Cyprus three years before us. She met her Cypriot husband, Sotiris, got married, and settled in my mother’s village of Steni. Sotiris comes from the village of Peristerona, which is found between my mother’s village of Steni and my father’s village of Lysos. He is fanatical about his ten hunting dogs, which get on my sister’s nerves. (Hunting is the favorite sport of the macho Cypriot male.) Sotiris trains his hunting dogs to catch wild rabbits in the surrounding hills. He works for the electricity board during the week, and on weekends he runs a small clay-pigeon shooting range in the village of Lysos. (Many Cypriots have two jobs to survive the economic crisis.) Dora works full time for a stunning five-star hotel called Anassa, and she is also a fantastic cook. Have I mentioned that she is one of those annoyingly gifted people that can eat as much as they like and never gain weight, without doing a stitch of exercise? The fact that she has two active children and keeps the cleanest house in the village, without a maid, must contribute to her above-mentioned gift. Her husband and eldest son never fail to take off their muddy boots before they enter their house. All the years of my mother’s “good housewife” training rubbed off on all three of us, but especially on Dora.
