In the kitchen, I heard a joyful shriek from the girls. All three sisters approved of my choice.

"That's what I like to hear! We need to drink to that!" the wizened goblin exclaimed, inspired. "Taisha, bring some more wine!"

Finally, for the first time all evening, it wasn't one of the older sisters coming from behind the screen, but the youngest, Taisha. Her dress and apron may not have been new, but at least they were clean. I immediately noticed that there was something wrong with the girl. She was making completely sure to turn her face away from me. Only when Taisha had set the bottle and two bowls on the table was I able to notice that the goblin girl’s left eye would barely open, and was surrounded by a huge, bright purple bruise. After noticing my interest in his daughter's black eye, Taisha's father commented with a laugh:

"The older girls gave her a bit of a whooping, sure. They’re angry that she takes all the good suitors away from them. They damaged the goods slightly, but I already voiced my fatherly disapproval. It's nothing, really. In two days, all this fuss over my three daughters will be over, and I'll be able to breathe freely once again!"

Taisha, clearly embarrassed at her appearance, handed me a fired-clay bowl already full of wine. But I didn't manage to take the cup before Tarek extended his huge hand and took my wine:

"Hey! That's my cup! Daughter, fill another for our guest."

It seemed to me that the black-eyed beauty grew slightly afraid, but filled me another, absolutely identical bowl of wine from the vine-enmeshed bottle without hesitation. Tarek Bigfoot, without any kind of toast, silently threw the whole container of wine into his gaping maw and hiccupped loudly. His eyes quickly began drooping. I also took a sip of the ruby-red drink.
