It required a bit of an adjustment to get used to the size and general speed of the Victor K2. I was also initially a bit overawed by the fuel panel located centrally between the pilots’ seats, that was at the heart of the K2’s role. Whilst most of the training was necessarily run in-house on the Tanker Training Flight of 55 Squadron, Fg Off Al Mann and I did have to go down to RAF Brize Norton to attend a short course on the principles and capabilities of air-to-air refuelling within the RAF and our wider NATO allies. Something I did find very surprising was that the AAR school at Brize Norton had a Victor K2 fuel panel training console, which I am sure would have been of much more value (to me, certainly) as a regular training tool had it been with the TTF at RAF Marham. After all, there were no other Victor squadrons anywhere else. It was the only such training device for the fuel panel, outside of the full Victor K2 flight simulator, that I ever saw. I guess the AAR school was jealously guarding its ‘empire’ but this console must have barely been used sat down at Brize Norton!
