EAST CHINA NORMAL UNIVERSITY NO. 1 AFFILIATED SECONDARY SCHOOL

Qin Song, an English teacher, killed himself during the Cultural Revolution.

FUDAN UNIVERSITY AFFILIATED SECONDARY SCHOOL

Yang Hanqing, a language teacher at the Shanghai Fudan University Affiliated Secondary School, killed herself in 1966 after being beaten multiple times by Red Guards from that school and from Beijing.

FUXING SECONDARY SCHOOL

Jin Zhixiong, manager of the school’s library, hanged herself after being struggled in summer 1966.

Jin was originally a history teacher, but she’d been working in the library since being designated a Rightist in 1957. Red Guards repeatedly beat and humiliated her and gave her a yin-yang haircut with blunt scissors. Soon after she returned home, her attackers came pounding on her door. Unable to bear the thought of more abuse, Jin hanged herself.

Around the same time, Red Guards from the school killed a student who came from outside of Shanghai, whom they accused of ‘passing himself off as the son of a senior cadre’ and ‘passing himself off as a Red Guard’. After killing that student, the Red Guards ordered the school’s music teacher, Peng Zhiwu (who was locked up in the school as an ‘ox demon and snake spirit’), to go out in the early hours of the morning to the shop across the street and buy soya milk to wash the blood off their clothes.

Red Guards from the school also killed an unidentified elderly man in his home in Shanyin Road in Hongkou District.
