CHAPTER 11

Harlech Castle may not have been the largest ruin on the North Wales coast, but it was one of the prettiest, and certainly offered a stunning view. We appeared to have timed it perfectly, arriving a little after three with hours of glorious weather ahead of us. A welcome surprise was the shade of the high castle walls to ensure we didn't get too hot and bothered.

After paying, we strolled across the footbridge from the impressive cafe and information centre that spanned the deep moat, no longer full of water. Min took my hand and smiled, her eyes dancing with joy. I laughed, recalling how much she loved bridges for some strange reason, never afraid of heights even though I always got a peculiar feeling in my belly.

Anxious whined from behind, so we turned to find him only a few steps onto the firm wooden boards, sitting with his paw held aloft and his head cocked to the side.

"We aren't falling for it, you silly boy," giggled Min, shaking her head.

"No way, buddy. If you want a fun afternoon, and maybe some treats," I teased, "then you have to cross. It's perfectly safe as long as you don't look over the edge." The moment the words were out of my mouth, I regretted it. Anxious turned to the side and in a panic spun and raced back to the building.

"Come on, you big softy. We aren't scared, so neither should you be," soothed Min, squatting and holding out her hands. "We'll look after you."

"That's right," I agreed, joining Min. "And look, the other dogs aren't worried. You don't want them to think you can't cross a bridge, do you?" I indicated a couple walking two bored-looking Labradors across; Anxious followed them with wide eyes.

Clearly not keen on being laughed at, he stood, shook out the fear, then tore across the bridge, sailed past us, and clacked his way to the far end, only stopping once he reached the large stone portico. He spun, barked at us to hurry up, so, shaking our heads and laughing we joined our fearless pooch and he got a biscuit for being valiant.

Through the portico, we entered a mini wonderland of well-trodden, tough Welsh grass surrounded on all sides by looming stone walls, the enduring remains of what was at one time a much larger fortress on a hill surrounded by the now receded sea.

Already hot, we followed Anxious into the deep shade afforded by the walls and took a moment to admire the ingenuity of people long departed.

"How did they build these things without modern equipment?" mused Min, shading her eyes as she studied the high walls where people walked carefully along the parapet, nothing but a low railing between them and certain death.

"Beats me. They were smart, that's for sure. I bet they had thousands of people hauling rocks, an incredible amount of horses to pull carts, and I can't even imagine how tough a life it must have been for the poor peasants.
