It contains seven nearly life-size figures; five are seen squarely from the front, two – and these are links between the sections of the tripartite composition – are seen in profile; that is to say … all the figures have been arranged parallel to the picture plane. They are considerably broadened by their draperies, that is to say by forms which are merely optical or visual supports, and which make for a unified surface; notice how the garments of the two main saints merge into those of their neighbours. The architecture though still of the same system as in earlier compositions of this type (that is to say, continuing the real architecture of the altar-frame), is seen in a perspective which makes the half-cylinder of the apse appear as a shallow niche owing to the great distance from which it is viewed. The viewpoint has also been raised well above the spectator’s level, and thus the representation has lost its illusionistic effect: it has become something objective. Symmetry and a regular alternation of bright and dark colours prevail in the whole. All these qualities make this reunion of saints timeless. There are few pictures in Venice in which the classical ideal of a pure and calm existence is as fully realized as here.
