Willie was back, bigger than life, yet somehow, diminished. Seated on her favorite kitchen stool, her face propped in her hands, she listened attentively while Tara recounted her most recent encounter with the man of the house.

“It was horrible,” Tara moaned. “How can I ever face him again? I am thoroughly humiliated.”

“It’s my fault,” Willie said. “Mr. McCourt, he seldom comes home early. I should have anticipated something like this. Man’s probably fit to be tied.”

“Why on earth would he be angry? Tara asked. “He can’t expect you to be at his beck and call every minute.”

“Umm,” Willie muttered, seemingly unconvinced.

“Besides, I had things covered here.” Tara’s face split in a self-deprecating grin. “Well, not entirely covered,” she amended.

Willie raised her eyebrows.

“In fact,” Tara added, “certain things could definitely have been more concealed.” Tara's merriment was contagious, and soon the housekeeper was laughing along with her.

“I guess you showed him a thing or two, Ms. Tara.”

“I guarantee it was more than he'd come looking for.”

They both dissolved in giggles.

With a glance toward the clock on the gas range, Tara hastily gathered up her things. “I’m sorry to rush off, but I've got to rehearse for Sunday Mass. I promised Harry that the dog would be here when he got home from school. If it’s okay with you, I’ll leave Chanel. I should be back by five-thirty.”

“Dog’s no trouble. Tend to what you must. I'm obliged for your help.”

With a backward wave of her hand, Tara made light of the housekeeper's thanks and sailed out the door. She hoped Willie would feel the same once the mysterious McCourt returned, but she had her doubts.
