“Igor,” Tobolsky suddenly addressed me by name, though he hadn't done so for a long time, “I understand that no one can undertake this operation better than you, and that you have done everything possible to prepare it, and even more than that, but I want a promise from you that if the situation gets out of hand, you will stop the attack immediately and order the fleet to retreat. I've been thinking a lot about what the near future holds, and it wasn't until recently, when I saw the recording of the tests of the collapsar gun installed on our ship, I realized that, perhaps for the first time, we were building a fleet capable of effectively countering any threat from the other side of the portal. We must not lose this fleet, Admiral. We may not get a second chance, after all we have no idea when the new enemy will come.”

“I promise, Mr. President,” I nodded to the Marshal, “I've got pretty tired of the losses myself.”

No one prevented our fleet from slowly building in battle order on the outskirts of the Mu Andromedae system, the toads were waiting for us at the four inhabited planets, where their ships could count on the support of numerous orbital fortresses. Small enemy reconnaissance ships occasionally slipped close to our ships, but they did not risk getting too close either, limiting themselves to launching unmanned probes toward us, which were cheerfully intercepted by the patrol corvettes.

The combined strength of the defense industries of the three races finally allowed me the freedom to choose the forces and means for a decisive strike, and I took full advantage of the opportunities given to me. Fifty Black Dragons, which until recently seemed to be the pinnacle of military technology, now played only a supporting role, preparing to repel enemy fleet counterstrikes if the toads had the courage and recklessness to do so. But they were not the main striking force. 24 former quarg aircraft carriers now had mixed crews and carried one collapsar gun each as their major caliber. They were the ones to be covered by Black Dragons and Swords of Justice, almost a hundred of which the quargs literally imposed on me. These battleships of our former enemies fell far short of Black Dragons in terms of performance, even after several upgrades and equipping them with projectiles with plasma warheads, they were inferior even to the newly constructed cruisers of the toads. But I just couldn't say no to the quargs. However, I was in no hurry to throw this force into the fight.

Despite their unprecedented firepower, the battleships, Rapier gun platforms, and the light forces that covered them had one drawback: they were operated by live crews, I was only going to put them under fire if absolutely necessary, and certainly not before I made the toads put all their trump cards they had up their sleeve on the table.

It was not for nothing that I refused to use drone torpedoes when storming the third planet in the star system we captured from the toads.
