Chapter eighteen
There was so much going on that sleep had eluded me. Jace softly snored in my ear with his arm snuggly around me. I loved being in his embrace through the night. Believe it or not, his little snore was comforting, it told me he was doing alright. Yet, I watched the clockâs time pass. 3:01, 3:02, 3:03⦠4:01 and that was when I got out of bed. I slipped out from under Jaceâs arm, tossed on clothes and crept down the stairs.
I pushed the start button on the coffeemaker and grabbed a fuzzy blanket from the couch. The early morning air was cool. With my cup of coffee and blanket, I walked out the front door to the porch swing. My eyes closed with the first sinful sip of coffee. If I were to be cut open and examined, I bet coffee ran through my veins. The quiet morning was perfect.
âMorning,â a male voice startled me.
I jerked in surprise to find Chuck trying to hide a smile. I breathed, âOh, my Goddess, you scared the tar out of me.â
âI can see that.â His voice was full of humor at catching me off guard, Iâm sure.
âMorning, how are you? Can I grab you a cup of coffee?â I asked as I took another sinful sip of hot coffee.
Chuck stilled for a moment, watching me. âYou donât mind?â
âHow do you like your coffee? I drink mine with half and half, Jace drinks his black, heâs a masochist. May, that girl likes her coffee with two scoops of sugar and flavored creamer. We have French Vanilla, White Chocolate Mocha and Amaretto, right now.â
âI am afraid to answer.â He chuckled. âThere will be judgment.â
âDear Goddess, you are going to say black⦠please noâ¦â I teased him.
âActually, no. Amaretto, no sugar. But I donât want to be a bother.â
I waved my hand at him and went in the house. My cup was topped off, and I poured him a cup as well.
He was sitting on the railing in front of the swing when I returned. I noticed he had shaved his head after turning in last night. He looked so much bigger and menacing, with his head shining under the porch light. His eyes closed as he took that first sip of coffee. âMmmmmm,â he moaned, the universal code for a great cup of coffee.
âWhy are you up so early?â I asked.
âCouldnât sleep. The hamster wonât stay off the wheel.â His finger was tapping the side of his head.
This I understood. âAnything I can help you with?â
He snuffled at me. âI really donât think you would have the first clue on how to help me?â
âTry me.â I looked at the morning glories, wishing they would open, even though the sun hadnât shined on them yet.
Chuck exhaled, running his hand over his shiny head. âAndy is probably my mate.â
âAndâ
âHe canât be. It isnât right.â
âWhy,â I asked as I took a sip of coffee.
âShifters arenât fags.â
My head snapped up, âWhat the fuck did you just say?â
âSee, I told you that you wouldnât understand.
