The boat floated silently out into the water, bobbing gently on the waves. Morgan watched over her shoulder as the shoreline slowly faded, her friends shrinking to an unidentifiable blur. Once they were gone and the land was no longer visible, she turned to face the open water again, wondering how far out she would drift before Laasya appeared.

The further she got from land, the higher the waves became until some crested the sides of the boat, splashing Morgan and making her feel a bit nervous. She wasn’t positive but she was pretty sure the odds of surviving if she capsized this far out to sea were pretty low. Another wave crashed, this one higher than before, and she watched over the sides of the boat, hoping that the waves would calm down soon. Although she had never needed the opportunity to discover whether or not she was seasick, she was pleased to find that her stomach remained calm. “Must have been the granola bar,” she mused to herself. “Gotta remember to pack more of those next time I’m back home.”

She wondered how Liore was doing at her house, standing in during her absence. Although it wasn’t the first time the shapeshifting elvor had traded places with Morgan, she hoped the other girl wasn’t causing too much trouble. The last time Morgan had spent a large amount of time away from home, long enough to require Liore to take her place, she had been grounded upon her return.

As the sun fell lower beneath the waves, Morgan grew more nervous, verging on scared. Sea birds had been circling high overhead and calling back and forth to each other since she had departed the shoreline but had long since been left behind. She wondered how far out to sea she was by that point.

“Where are they?” She moved around in the boat, searching the horizon for any sign of the guardian that was supposed to meet her but she saw nothing but undulating water. As far as she could see in the fading light, hers was the only craft on the entire ocean.

Stars twinkled in the sky, neither of the moons had risen yet although the sky grew darker and darker. She knew that the skies formed constellations, but she had never bothered learning much about them, let alone where to locate any of them. About the only thing she could find was the Big Dipper.

Soaked from head to foot by the waves washing across the boat, Morgan was surprised that the crashing water hadn’t managed to sink her yet. As she looked back toward the waves, she noticed movement in the water a distance off. It was hard to see what was causing the movement in the fading light but as she watched she realized that whatever it was, it was coming closer.

When the disturbance in the water disappeared behind a wave, Morgan waited for it to reappear, both curious and nervous about what could be causing it. As the waves receded, the movement was gone.
