Chapter Twenty-One
It took some work and the help of friends to sneak behind Creole’s back and plan a surprise getaway. I’d gotten up early and made coffee, bringing him a cup in bed. While he was drinking it, I hopped off the bed, went into the closet, and wheeled out a suitcase.
“You going somewhere?” He eyed me over the rim of his cup.
I tapped my forehead. “You’re so smart.” I disappeared back inside the closet and came out with clothes for him, which I threw on the chair, dropping the shoes on the floor.
“I don’t know what you’re up to, but I’ve got to get to the office.”
“I got special permission and got you the day off. You’re all mine.”
“So, what you’re saying is that my two partners are in cahoots with you and not a word to me.”
“Pretty much.” I winked at him.
We showered and dressed, then climbed in the Hummer, where I programmed the GPS.
“Do I get a clue where we’re going?” Creole leaned over to get a look at the screen, and I turned it away.
“Nope.” I gave him a big grin.
He was a little surprised when we headed north. I’d chosen a local resort that hadn’t been open long to avoid spending a lot of time on the road, and booked a bungalow on the beach that had every amenity. We only had to pick up the phone to order anything we wanted.
We spent three days without our phones turned on, sleeping late, spending time on the beach, swimming in our own private pool, and booked a canoe once I was assured I wouldn’t have to pull my weight.
On the way home, Creole said, “We need to do this more often.”
“I wanted you to know that I appreciate you and don’t take you for granted.”
“Same here. I worked hard to get you, and I’m keeping you.”
I laughed. “How long after we get home before the phone starts ringing?”
“I did ask Didier if they had a telescope; told him your theory that that’s how his wife knows everything going on. He laughed without commenting. So, it wouldn’t surprise me.”
