Chapter 16

The bed-headed vampire slammed his fist onto the table, my books trembling under the force. I had thought the embassy’s library would be a place I could find some peace and quiet. Instead, I found myself almost nose-to-nose with the first hostile vampire I had encountered since walking through the embassy doors.

He leaned down with a bloodshot glare, slurping from a blood bag. My heart sputtered, and I fought to keep a neutral face.

“I only asked if you could drink that somewhere else,” I said, gesturing to his blood bag.

“This is a vampire embassy. We’re here to avoid that kind of prejudice from people like you,” he said.

I wanted so badly to roll my eyes, hard enough to make me need glasses. But my mother’s words got the better of me: That kind of behaviour does not befit a young lady. Why did I even care? She wasn’t there, although sometimes it felt like she was watching my every move.

Nate had told me about the embassy’s library when he found me trying to get comfortable on a stool in the spell circle room. Monica’s books were oversized and difficult to handle. I had retreated to a corner in the library and spread out all my reading material across three desks, hoping to deter anyone from joining me.

Noah would have had a heart attack if he ever set foot in that place. Two storeys high, the bookcases were tall enough that only ladders allowed access to the top shelves. A gallery ringed the wall, giving access to the second storey of bookcases.

I hadn’t needed to take any off the shelves, but, just in passing, some of them looked older than Nate.

“I haven’t got a problem with the blood,” I said, folding my hands in my lap. “Have some respect for the books. You could spill it.”

I hadn’t brought so much as a bottle of water into a library since I spilled a can of pop over an entire series of Encyclopedia Britannica when I was eleven.

“Out there, you can tell me what to do,” the vampire said, jabbing a finger toward the window. “In here, you can’t control me.”

With that, he shot me one last glare and stomped over to the sofa, slumping down onto it.

An exasperated noise rumbled in my throat, but I turned back to my books. There was a clear distinction in attitude between the vampires there. Half of them were welcoming, almost overly so, as they made sure they made a good impression on me. The other half expressed their disgust that Carnell allowed me to stay there, feeling as if my very presence was an infringement on their rights. Yet, that was the first time I had experienced any hostility.

I didn’t have time to argue; I had work to do. The time flashed up on my mobile phone screen when I tapped it: 02:23.

I ran a hand through my hair, trying to pull any loose strands free. Sleep wasn’t doing me much good. It was hard enough to fall asleep as it was, but there was little I could do about the nightmares.
